“…The fact that cholesteatomas had basal layer hyperplasia and eventually formed epithelial cones indicates that this disease can be hyperproliferative, with increased number of cells in the basal layer forming invaginations into the perimatrix. Many authors 15,22 found increased inflammation around epithelial cones, but this finding was not observed by Pereira 4 . Our study used Spearman's rank correlation test to show the associations between presence of inflammation, acanthosis, basal layer hyperplasia, and epithelial cone formation, showing that the greater the inflammatory process, the greater the chances of acanthosis, basal layer hyperplasia, and presence of epithelial cones in cholesteatoma fragments.…”
