Restaurant wastewater treatment with a two-chamber septic tank and a sequencing batch reactor

Abstract: Restaurant wastewater in Indonesia comprises a variety of organic components that are difficult to degrade, such as COD, BOD, TSS, and oils and fats. Although grease traps are usually used to collect restaurant wastewater, the effluent still exceeds the applicable standards. For this reason, the combined technology of a two-chamber septic tank (ST) and a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was chosen for this investigation. Both are biological treatment methods that involve an anaerobic and aerobic phase. This reac… Show more

“…Adding an anaerobic phase in conventional pre-treatment reactors provides time for nitrification and denitrification microorganisms to reduce the total N parameter in wastewater effectively [9] [29]. The balanced anaerobic and aerobic phases will help the nitrification cycle (conversion of ammonia nitrogen to nitrate) and denitrification (conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas) to occur ideally [10] [11]. Based on this analysis, the addition of an anaerobic phase at the beginning of SBR is considered important as it can remove nitrate and phosphate pollutants more optimally.…”

“…The acclimatization process is completed when the COD removal reaches 50% and is constant. When COD removal has reached 50% and has remained steady, the acclimatization process is complete [Hendrasarie et al 2021;Zao et al 2021].…”

“…This is because the stirring speed can speed up the homogeneity of the liquid during the mixing phase. As a result, the faster the stirring speed, the less time it takes to achieve homogeneity in the mixture [Hendrasarie et al 2021]. The SBR was also measured without an impeller, using only a diffuser, which was an important aspect of this research.…”
