Natural aeolian sand has the characteristics of low cohesion and poor water stability. In order to improve its crack resistance properties in the process of freeze-thaw cycles, P.O 42.5 ordinary Portland cement was added to form a mixture called cement improved aeolian sand (CIAS). SEM was used to analyze the microscopic micro-structure of CIAS at different times (7 days and 28 days). The mechanical properties of CIAS samples affected by freeze-thaw cycles were tested in a triaxial instrument, and gray-scale images of the three-phase distribution in the CIAS after freeze-thaw cycling were obtained by computed tomography (CT) scanning technology. The pore characteristic parameters (pore area, fractal dimension, and crack length) were studied by digital image process technique. Based on classical Griffith fracture theory, the development of the crack length and crack width with increasing freeze-thaw cycles is determined. Assuming that the pore area subordinates to the Weibull distribution, the parameters of the Weibull distribution, the damage evolution defined by the elastic modulus attenuation, and the pore area development of CIAS were determined. Research shows the cohesion decreases and internal friction angle increases with increasing cycle numbers. Three development patterns are observed: crack growth, crack closure, and crack merging, and the three patterns interact during freeze-thaw cycling. Furthermore, the fractal dimension of the pore edge fluctuates with the increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles. This work provides a theoretical basis for the application of aeolian sand and develops a method for disaster prevention in applications of freeze-thaw cycling.

As groundwater activity develops in a landslide system, the water-rock (soil) interaction increasingly influences the development of the landslide hazard. In this paper, Huangtupo landslide was chosen as the subject of our research, which is located beside the Three Gorges Reservoir and the deformation continued for a long time. First, based on a comprehensive field survey, ten types of bad geological elements which probably induce the deformation were collected from different parts of landslide. These include a soft rock layer, the sliding soil, a weak intercalation and the typical rock close to the slip zone. Then, to trace the internal relationships among these samples, the microstructure, chemical composition of minerals, the migration and evolution of clay minerals, also the particle size distribution characteristics of all the samples were analyzed separately. Comparison of the result shows, that the evolutionary paths are very obvious among these samples. With the activities of water-rock (soil) interaction, the formation and evolution of main bad geological elements can be summarized. Afterwards, the detailed mechanism of interaction is revealed by focusing on four samples which compose one of these three paths, using additional data from physical and mechanical tests, the study shows how water-rock (soil) interaction affects the microstructure and weakens the mechanical properties of rock and soil. The presented detailed research probes the water-rock (soil) interaction mechanism specifically for Huangtupo riverside landslide as a case study. Furthermore, the applied multi-sample dynamic tracing method is verified as a means to discover and illustrate the deformation mechanism of landslides.

Most slow-moving landslides in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) region of China are characterized by pre-existing shear surfaces. The large deformation within the shear zones usually gives rise to clastic soil formation. The creep properties have large influence on the kinematic feature of landslides. In this paper, we report an in-situ direct shear creep test carried out in the shear zone of a reactivated slow-moving landslide in the TGR region. Correspondingly, some laboratory ring shear creep tests are carried out to interpret the movement pattern of this landslide. The shear zone soil exhibits similar non-attenuating creep responses in both the in-situ direct shear and laboratory ring shear creep tests. At the same stress level, however, the in-situ direct shear creep test yields a larger rate of creep displacement due to shearing along the landslide direction. In the ring shear creep tests, at the prepeak stage, the critical creep stress that triggers creep failure is slightly lower than the peak shear strength but much larger than the residual strength; at the postfailure stage, the critical creep stress of the shear-zone soil is equal to the residual shear strength. The rate-dependent residual shear strength may account for the stepwise movement pattern of the landslide.
