Research on water–rock (soil) interaction by dynamic tracing method for Huangtupo landslide, Three Gorges Reservoir, PR China

Abstract: As groundwater activity develops in a landslide system, the water-rock (soil) interaction increasingly influences the development of the landslide hazard. In this paper, Huangtupo landslide was chosen as the subject of our research, which is located beside the Three Gorges Reservoir and the deformation continued for a long time. First, based on a comprehensive field survey, ten types of bad geological elements which probably induce the deformation were collected from different parts of landslide. These include… Show more

“…The physical and mechanical properties of soil vary with soil type. They also influence the infiltration of surface water and the flow of ground water [ 79 , 80 ]. The soil types in the study area were classified into six classes ( Figure 2 l).…”

“…With a total volume of 69 million m 3 , it is one of the four largest landslides in the TGR Jian and Yang 2013). It was partially reactivated after the river impoundment and the deformation still continues Jiang et al 2012). Its sliding surface is located in a depth of 80-100 m. Within the active sliding landslide body, a rock laboratory was constructed by the Chinese government.…”

“…Some of these landslides appear to be conditioned by the transformation of rocks and soil minerals into very low-permeability and high-plasticity clays. This transformation is evidenced by secondary clay-bearing layers in slip surfaces, something observed in landslides of Santa Lucia and Barbados [18], Japan [19], Italy [20], Hong-Kong [21], and particularly in the Three Gorges Reservoir region of China (e.g., [22][23][24][25]). The presence of these argillaceous layers, which are normally composed of a high proportion of clays belonging to the smectite group, poses a problem for slope stability analyses because these layers have mechanical properties that are very different from those of the slope materials.…”
