Requirements for a new detector at the South Pole receiving an accelerator neutrino beam

Abstract: There are recent considerations to increase the photomultiplier density in the IceCube detector array beyond that of DeepCore, which will lead to a lower detector energy threshold and a relatively huge fiducial mass for the neutrino detection. This initiative is known as "Precision IceCube Next Generation Upgrade" (PINGU). We discuss the possibility to send a neutrino beam from one of the major accelerator laboratories in the Northern hemisphere to such a detector. Such an experiment would be unique in the sen… Show more

“…At this level, events are assumed to be reconstructable. At the relevant energies in this study, the effective fiducial volume for electron and muon neutrinos is approximately equal [77]. Under this assumption, the fiducial volume is universal and will not affect the relative amount of electron and muon neutrinos/antineutrino event rates.…”

“…Although the atmospheric neutrino flux for ν τ orν τ is negligibly small [54], we can account for the ν τ andν τ scattering contributions, by using the same formula (2.5) for α = τ , even though the effective fiducial volume for τ -CC and neutral current (NC) events may be much smaller than those of µ-CC and e-CC events [56].…”

“…Note that, the plots in figure 1 have been updated from those of [39] by accounting for the fiducial volume for 40-string configuration, which is obtained from the 20-string configuration [45] by rescaling the neutrino energy, V (40) eff (E ν ) = V (20) eff (2 × E ν ). Since the full-detector simulation of the PINGU detector is not available yet, and the fact that the tau neutrino contribution is negligible while the difference between the effective fiducial volumes for muon and electron neutrino is not so large according to a preliminary simulation [56], we just assume that the effective fiducial volume is the same for different flavors.…”

“…A study of the PINGU detector and accelerator-based neutrino beams also exists [25]. On the other hand, there is no doubt that the future neutrino factories are the best place to measure with high statistical significance [26][27][28][29].…”
