Reproductive technologies and the risk of congenital heart defects

Abstract: Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has become widespread, accounting for ∼2% of all births worldwide, with a similar proportion in Japan. Our goal was to determine whether ART is associated with an increased risk of congenital heart defect (CHD). The study subjects were 2716 pregnant women (2317 in a spontaneous conception [SC] group and 399 in an assisted conception [AC] group). Of patients in the AC group, 142 were treated with ovulation-inducing agents (OIAs), 56 with artificial insemination by the husb… Show more

“…Notably, birth defects were a problem, and the major congenital malformations in newborns conceived by ART were not significantly different from those of newborns who were spontaneously conceived (Henningsen et al, 2018). However, there were significant differences in some birth defects, especially congenital heart defects, among newborns conceived by ART compared with those spontaneously conceived (Giorgione et al, 2018; Hoorsan et al, 2017; Iwashima, Ishikawa, & Itoh, 2017; Patil et al, 2018). In our retrospective study, there was a case of cardiopulmonary hypoplasia in the NSMR <4% group and a case of congenital ventricular deficiency in the NSMR ≥4% group.…”

В Китае при обследовании около 100 000 детей, рожденных с помощью ЭКО, были выявлены высокие риски врожденных аномалий системы кровообращения, нервной, костно-мышечной, пищеварительной и мочеполовой систем.…”
