Congenital heart defects in IVF/ICSI pregnancy: systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Objective There is no consensus in current practice guidelines on whether conception by in-vitro fertilization (IVF)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) techniques is an indication for performing a fetal echocardiogram. The aim of the study was to assess whether congenital heart defects (CHD) occur more often in pregnancies conceived after IVF/ICSI as compared with those conceived spontaneously. “…In agreement with previous studies, CHD was associated with multiple pregnancies. A recent meta‐analysis suggests that IVF treatment increases the risk of CHD . Similarly, we observed an association between IVF and CHD when the whole cohort (including pregnancy terminations) was studied.…”

“…A recent meta-analysis suggests that IVF treatment increases the risk of CHD. 37 Similarly, we observed an association between IVF and CHD when the whole cohort (including pregnancy terminations) was studied. However, no association between IVF and CHD was detected in the birth cohort or the cohort of multiple pregnancies.…”

“…Another meta-analysis of 25,856 children conceived using IVF/ICSI techniques showed an increased risk of developing congenital heart defects compared with those conceived spontaneously [46]. Using an IVF mouse model, this study goes some significant way to addressing the urgent need for us to better understand the underlying mechanisms influencing ART-induced cardiovascular dysfunction ( Figure 6).…”

“…Several studies report increased rates of fetal growth restriction, low birthweight, prematurity, increased cardiovascular malformations, leukemia and Hodgkin lymphoma in ART offspring. With some studies indicating there can be metabolic effects in the long-term health of these children with increased incidences of elevated blood pressure, total body fat and fasting glucose being reported [121][122][123][124][125][126][127] Based on Green et al; 116 Critchley et al; 117 Critchley et al; 118 NICE; 119 Metzger et al; 120 Basu et al; 113 Davies et al; 121 Pinborg et al; 122 Huntriss et al; 123 Hart et al; 124 Giorgione et al; 125 Källén et al; 126 Reigstad et al 127…”
