Occurrence and significance of ovarian and follicular regression in cacharaPseudoplatystoma fasciatum (Linnaeus, 1766): a histology approach ABSTRACTThe processes of ovarian regression and follicular atresia which reproduction was not induced by hormone in confined cachara, Pseudoplatystoma fasciatum, were investigated. The macro and microscopic characteristics (oocytes diameter and histology) of the ovaries were described every 20 days, in four stages: initial regression (Rg I = first 20 days), intermediate regression (Rg II = from 21st to 40th day), final regression (Rg III = from 41st to 80th day) and the recovering stage, called resting II (R II = from 81st to 150th day). The experiment was conducted from late January (summer -longer days) to May (autumn -shorter days). In the beginning, A0 samples showed oocyte diameters ranging from 437.5 to 1,187.5µm, suggesting that oocytes were in perinucleolar, at final maturation and atretic phases. After 150 days, the diameters reached the lowest values and a ruptured zona radiata, as well as the nearly complete reabsorption of the yolk could be visualized. At the same time, a sharp decrease in the mean values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI), water temperature, photophase and rainfall was observed. The gradual involution of this long process was dynamic and complex, affecting the spawning success (fertilization, eclosion and larvae survival rates) and, consequently, the whole productive system. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes cores de aquários na larvicultura da piabanha-do-pardo (Brycon sp.). Os tratamentos consistiram na utilização de aquários de cores claras (branca, verde e azul) e escuras (marrom e preta). Ao final do experimento, foram mensurados a sobrevivência, o peso, o comprimento total e a coloração das larvas, que foram comparados pelo teste de Tukey, a 5% de probabilidade. A sobrevivência foi menor (66,25%), com maior taxa de canibalismo (17,08%), no aquário de cor azul, quando comparado ao aquário de cor marrom (84,17%), com baixa taxa de canibalismo (6,25%). O comprimento total, o peso e a mortalidade não diferiram entre os tratamentos. A coloração das larvas escureceu progressivamente dos aquários mais claros para os mais escuros, o que interferiu no canibalismo e na sobrevivência. O aquário marrom promove maior valor de sobrevivência e menor taxa de canibalismo nas larvas de piabanha-do-pardo.Termos para indexação: Brycon, canibalismo, coloração, mortalidade, pigmentação. Larviculture of piabanha-do-pardo in aquariums of different colorsAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different colors of aquariums on the larviculture of piabanha-do-pardo (Brycon sp.). The treatments consisted of the use of light-(white, green, and blue) and dark-(brown and black) colored aquariums. At the end of the experiment, survival, weight, total length, and color of the larvae were measured and compared by the Tukey test, at 5% probability. Survival was lower (66.25%), with a higher rate of cannibalism (17.08%), in the blue-colored aquarium when compared to the brown-colored one (84.17%), with a low rate of cannibalism (6.25%). Total length, weight, and mortality did not differ among treatments. The color of the larvae gradually darkened from the lighter to the darker aquariums, which interfered with cannibalism and survival. The brown aquarium promotes a greater survival value and a lower rate of cannibalism in larvae of piabanha-do-pardo.

Piabanha (Brycon insignis) is a freshwater fish species from the drainages in Southeastern Brazil. During the 1950s, it was an important economic and food resource for local populations, but dramatic and continuous environmental degradation seriously jeopardized the B. insignis populations in the region. Microsatellite markers were used to assess the genetic structure of wild populations of B. insignis and compare the genetic variability and integrity of the wild populations with a captive population. Samples of DNA from 208 specimens from geographically isolated populations were analyzed. Population genetic structure was investigated using F ST , R ST estimates as well as AMOVA. All five loci used in this study were polymorphic with observed heterozygosity ranging from 0.77 (± 0.15) to 0.88 (± 0.07) in the wild population and 0.90 (± 0.09) in the captive population and the allelic richness average were 7.56 (± 0.27) and 5.80 (± 1.02), respectively. Overall genetic differences were significantly partitioned among populations (F ST = 0.072, p = 0.034). Evidence of a genetic bottleneck was found in some of the wild populations, but especially in the captive population. The results showed that genetic variability still can be found in B. insignis populations which are currently structured possibly due to anthropic actions. The implications of these findings for the management and conservation of B. insignis populations are discussed.Piabanha (Brycon insignis) é uma espécie de peixe de água doce oriunda de drenagens da região sudeste do Brasil. Durante os anos de 1950, esta espécie foi um importante recurso econômico para populações locais. Contudo, a intensa e contínua degradação ambiental afetou seriamente as populações de B. insignis na região. Marcadores microssatélites foram usados para avaliar a estrutura genética de populações selvagens de B. insignis e comparar a variabilidade genética e integridade das populações selvagens com uma população de cativeiro. Amostras de DNA de 208 espécimes de populações geograficamente isoladas foram analisadas. A estrutura populacional foi investigada usando-se estimadores de F ST e R ST bem como AMOVA. Todos os loci usados neste estudo foram polimórficos com heterozigosidades observadas variando de 0.77 (± 0.15) a 0.88 (± 0.77) em populações selvagens e 0.90 (± 0.09) na população de cativeiro e a riqueza alélica média foi de 7.56 (± 0.27) e 5.80 (± 1.02), respectivamente. A maioria das diferenças genéticas foi significativa entre populações (F ST = 0.072, p = 0.034). Evidências de efeito gargalo foram observadas em algumas populações selvagens e especialmente também na população de cativeiro. Os resultados do presente estudo mostraram que as populações de B. insignis ainda apresentam variabilidade genética e que estas populações estão atualmente estruturadas geneticamente provavelmente devido a ações antrópicas. As implicações destes achados para o manejo e conservação das populações de B. insiginis são discutidas.
