The Neotropical freshwater fish fauna is very rich--according to the most recent catalogue 71 families and 4,475 species have been described. However, only a small amount of general information is available on the composition of Neotropical marine fishes. In Brazil, 1,298 marine species have been recorded. General analysis of available cytogenetic and population genetic data clearly indicates research has been mainly concentrated on freshwater fishes. Thus, today, cytogenetic information is available for 475 species of Characiformes, 318 species of Siluriformes, 48 species of Gymnotiformes, 199 freshwater species that do not belong to the superorder Ostariophysi, and only 109 species of marine fishes. For the species studied, only about 6% have sex chromosomes and about 5% have supernumerary or B chromosomes. A review of the cytogenetic studies shows that these data have provided valuable information about the relationships between fish groups, the occurrence of cryptic species and species complexes, the mechanism of sex determination and sex chromosome evolution, the distribution of nucleolus organizer regions, the existence supernumerary chromosomes, and the relationship between polyploidy and evolution. In relation to populations in Neotropical marine waters, the studies have shown the presence of cryptic species, which has important implications for fishery management. Different levels of genetic structuring can be found among Neotropical freshwater migratory fish species. This raises important implications for fish population genetic diversity and consequently its sustainable utilization in inland fisheries and aquaculture, specifically for conservation of ichthyo-diversity and survival.

The "surubim do Paraíba" (Steindachneridion parahybae) is a freshwater catfish endemic to the Paraíba do Sul River basin, Brazil. This species has been seriously threatened by environmental disturbances in the last several decades. Wild Steindachneridion parahybae males and females were collected in 2003 and taken to the hatchery of a power plant of the Companhia Energética de São Paulo (CESP). Steindachneridion parahybae broodstocks were artificially induced to reproduce in December 2003 using a combination of carp pituitary extract (CPE) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Oocytes and milt were stripped; the fertilized eggs were transferred to 60-liter conical incubators and hatched larvae distributed in nine horizontal trays. Exogenous feed was started just after yolk sac absorption. A high rate of cannibalism and photophobia were observed during the larval period, resulting in a 26% survival rate from larvae to fingerlings.O "surubim do Paraíba" (Steindachneridion parahybae) é um bagre de água doce, endêmico da bacia do rio Paraíba do Sul, Brasil. Reprodutores de S. parahybae foram induzidos à reprodução artificial em dezembro de 2003 usando uma combinação de extrato hipofisário de carpa (CPE) e gonadotropina coriônica humana (hCG). Após a extrusão dos óvulos e do sêmen, os ovos fertilizados foram transferidos para incubadoras cônicas de 60 litros e, em seguida, as larvas eclodidas distribuídas em nove incubadoras horizontais. Após a absorção do saco vitelino, a alimentação exógena foi iniciada. Uma alta taxa de canibalismo e fotofobia foram observados durante o período larval, resultando em uma taxa de sobrevivência de 26% de larvas para os alevinos.

Resumo -O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar a variabilidade genética de duas variedades de tilápia nilótica (Oreochromis niloticus), Chitralada e Red Stirling, e de suas progênies submetidas a programas de melhoramento genético, em sistemas intensivos de cultivo por meio de marcadores microssatélites. Foram utilizados 30 animais de cada variedade parental, 30 animais híbridos (CH), provenientes do cruzamento entre as variedades Chitralada e Red Stirling, e 30 animais (RR) provenientes do cruzamento entre os parentais da variedade Red Stirling. Utilizaram-se cinco microssatélites: UNH104, UNH108, UNH118, UNH222 e UNH231. Observaram-se baixos índices de endogamia, com valores de F IS negativo para as duas variedades e seus cruzamentos. Verificouse diferença genética entre as duas variedades, obtida pelo cálculo do índice de fixação de alelos (F ST = 0,131 e R ST = 0,130). As variedades parentais Chitralada e Red Stirling apresentaram 24,4% de distância genética, o que se refletiu na presença de vigor híbrido com 23,5% de incremento em rendimento no plantel CH.Termos para indexação: Oreochromis niloticus, melhoramento genético, híbridos, endogamia. Thirty individuals of each parental strain, 30 crossbred (CH) individuals from Chitralada and Red Stirling strains, and 30 individuals from Red Stirling progeny (RR) were used. Five microsatellites loci were utilized: UNH104, UNH108, UNH118, UNH222 e UNH231. Low values of inbreeding were observed with a negative F IS in both strains and their crossings. Genetic differences between the two strains were detected through F ST = 0.131 and R ST = 0.130. The parental strains Chitralada and Red Stirling presented 24.4% of genetic distance, which produced 23.5% of hybrid vigor in the CH stock.

Colossoma macropomum, or tambaqui, is the largest native Characiform species found in the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, yet few resources for genetic studies and the genetic improvement of tambaqui exist. In this study, we identified a large number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for tambaqui and constructed a high-resolution genetic linkage map from a full-sib family of 124 individuals and their parents using the genotyping by sequencing method. In all, 68,584 SNPs were initially identified using minimum minor allele frequency (MAF) of 5%. Filtering parameters were used to select high-quality markers for linkage analysis. We selected 7,734 SNPs for linkage mapping, resulting in 27 linkage groups with a minimum logarithm of odds (LOD) of 8 and maximum recombination fraction of 0.35. The final genetic map contains 7,192 successfully mapped markers that span a total of 2,811 cM, with an average marker interval of 0.39 cM. Comparative genomic analysis between tambaqui and zebrafish revealed variable levels of genomic conservation across the 27 linkage groups which allowed for functional SNP annotations. The large-scale SNP discovery obtained here, allowed us to build a high-density linkage map in tambaqui, which will be useful to enhance genetic studies that can be applied in breeding programs.

The silky shark, Carcharhinus falciformis, is a large-bodied, oceanic-coastal, epipelagic species found worldwide in tropical and subtropical waters. Despite its commercial importance, concerns about overexploitation, and likely ecological significance of this shark as an upper trophic-level predator, understanding of its population dynamics remains unclear for large parts of its distribution. We investigated the genetic diversity, population structure and demographic history of the silky shark along the western Atlantic Ocean based on the use of 707 bp of the mitochondrial DNA control region (mtCR). A total of 211 silky sharks were sampled, originating from five areas along the western Atlantic Ocean. The mitochondrial sequences revealed 40 haplotypes, with overall haplotype and nucleotide diversities of 0.88 (± 0.012) and 0.005 (± 0.003), respectively. The overall population structure was significantly different among the five western Atlantic Ocean regions. Phylogenetic analysis of mtCR sequences from globally sourced silky shark samples revealed two lineages, comprising a western Atlantic lineage and western Atlantic-Indo-Pacific lineage that diverged during the Pleistocene Epoch. In general, tests for the demographic history of silky sharks supported a population expansion for both the global sample set and the two lineages.
