Reorientation Deficits Are Associated With Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

Abstract: The VReoT seemed to be accurate in differentiating patients with aMCI from controls and may represent an evaluation supplement for spatial memory deficits in prodromal stages of Alzheimer's dementia.

“…This finding might be useful to implement dedicated programs for people with spatial memory impairments normally assisted with navigation systems not requiring users to encode, transform and memorize spatial information (e.g. Münzer et al, , Caffò, et al, , Lancioni et al, ; Lancioni, et al, ). Providing them with specific training on visual cues and encouraging the adoption of an inner speech would strengthen the process of spatial storage useful to an effective orientation in the space.…”

“…For example, Virtual Reality for Early Detection of Dementia (VReDD) including VR Practice, VR Park and VR Games was developed to assess spatial memory of early dementia patients (Shamsuddin et al, 2011 , 2012 ). Caffò and colleagues also showed that the spatial memory impairments of amnestic MCI (aMCI) patients could be identified by a reorientation task in VR (Caffò et al, 2012 ).…”

“…Recommended behavioral intervention strategies for persons in the earlier stages of the disease have focused, among others, on assisting those persons with the: (a) performance of daily activities; (b) orientation and travel in indoor and limited outdoor areas; and (c) verbal reminiscence (Lancioni et al, 2010 , 2012 , 2013a , b , 2014b ; Caffò et al, 2012 , 2014 ; Crete-Nishihata et al, 2012 ; Serrani Azcurra, 2012 ; Subramaniam and Woods, 2012 ; Cavallo et al, 2013 ; Lanza et al, 2014 ; Singh et al, 2014 ; Wingbermuehle et al, 2014 ). In each of these areas, technology-aided programs have been developed with the aim of enabling the persons to achieve satisfactory performance independent of staff intervention (Singh et al, 2014 ).…”
