Renal perfusion imaging by MRI

Abstract: Renal perfusion can be quantitatively assessed by multiple magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods, including dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE), arterial spin labeling (ASL), and diffusion‐weighted imaging with intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) analysis. In this review we summarize the advances in the field of renal‐perfusion MRI over the past 5 years. The review starts with a brief introduction of relevant MRI methods, followed by a discussion of recent technical developments. In the main section of the revi… Show more

“…Renal perfusion can be evaluated quantitatively using various MRI methods, including dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI, arterial spin labeling, and diffusion-weighted MRI. 121 Moreover, blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) MRI, which exploits deoxygenated hemoglobin's paramagnetic influence on the MRI signal, can be used to gain insights on tissue oxygenation. 122,123 Epidemiological evidence also implicates low birth weight as a risk factor for the development of diabetes.…”

“…One of the older approaches to introduce electrodes into an NMR tube based on a metal film was published by Zhang and Zwanziger in 2011. 256 They used a thin Au film deposited on a 3 mm glass tube with small bored holes for ion exchange that served as WE and extended into the NMR detection area. A pseudo-RE was positioned inside of the WE glass tube and a curved platinized Pt-foil CE was placed between the NMR tube wall and the WE.…”

“…Application of ferumoxytol might impact mapping of regional perfusion in renal tissue using arterial spin labelling (ASL) techniques . The ASL technique employs magnetization‐labelled water in arterial blood of the aorta or the renal arteries as a freely diffusible endogenous tracer.…”

“…Application of ferumoxytol might impact mapping of regional perfusion in renal tissue using arterial spin labelling (ASL) techniques. 30,[73][74][75] The ASL technique employs magnetization-labelled water in arterial blood of the aorta or the renal arteries as a freely diffusible endogenous tracer. In a preparation module, spin labelling is applied to tag the longitudinal magnetization of arterial blood water before it enters the imaging plane in the kidney.…”
