Removing Shadow for Hand Segmentation Based on Background Subtraction

Abstract: Hand segmentation is an important stage for accurate hand detection and background subtraction is one of the best solutions to detect the hand motion accurately, however the shadow is the critical problem in this technique which is not easy to separate the hand region from the shadow area. Removing shadow using an automatic threshold will be a good solution to detect the hand region where the variety of skin color and lighting condition affect the hand segmentation. The proposed approach involves three stages:… Show more

“…In a gesture recognition system, the area of interest detection is the key area that needs a good gesture recognition rate with a high accuracy. The simplest way to achieve area of interest detection is through background subtraction [ 15 ]. Mesbahi et al [ 16 ] proposed a gesture recognition method using background subtraction and convexity defects.…”

“…It is necessary to separate the moving human foreground pixels from the shadow pixels so as to avoid interference with the subsequent extraction of the falling-down feature. In this paper, we do the shadow removal [1922] in the HSV color space. The HSV color space is the most commonly used color model in machine vision research.…”

“…Some specific features such as skin color [14][15][16][17][18], shape [19,20], both skin color and shape [21][22][23], motion [24], a combination of motion, skin color and edge [25] information are typically used for segmentation using conventional RGB cameras. The methods using motion information are optical flow [26], frame difference [27], background subtraction [28,29], etc. The optical flow method has a wide range of application.…”
