Removal of Copper, Nickel and Zinc Ions from Aqueous Solution by Chitosan‐8‐Hydroxyquinoline Beads

Abstract: In this work, 8-hydroxyquinoline is used as the active sites in cross-linked chitosan beads with epichlorohydrin (CT-8HQ). The CT-8HQ material was shaped in bead form and used for heavy metal removal from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH 5.0 with both batch and column methods and the maximum adsorption capacity of metal ions by the CT-8HQ was attained in 4 h in the batch experiment. The adsorption capacity order was: Cu 2+ A Ni 2+ A Zn 2+ for both mono-and multi-component systems with batch co… Show more

“…These effluents, when discharged without adequate treatment, degrade the quality of recipient waters. Over time, Cu(II) ions accumulate in the tissues of aquatic organisms and may harm certain species of fish and other marine resources (Barros et al, 2008;Šljivić et al, 2009). When ingested in sufficient amounts, Cu(II) ions induce stomach ulcer, mental retardation, brain and liver damage in humans and animals (Zhu et al, 2009).…”

“…These characteristics are very important for an adsorbent [27]. Today, there are several studies on the research of crosslinked chitosan for drug delivery systems and wastewater treatment processes [28][29][30]. Grafted chitosan copolymers are potentially better adsorbent for dye removal from the wastewater than the polysaccharides due to the presence of grafted chains.…”

“…Therefore, it is generally being used either to establish the conditional expression of a gene in response to a specific substance, growth condition, or habitat (Barker et al, 1998;Shetty et al, 1999). The heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) represent a serious problem to the environment and public health when they contaminate superficial and ground water (Barros et al, 2008). Cd is extremely toxic even in low concentrations, which tend to bioaccumulate in organisms and ecosystems (Kopera et al, 2004;Giaginis et al, 2006).…”
