Reliable and efficient autonomous driving: the need for heterogeneous vehicular networks

Abstract: Autonomous driving technology has been regarded as a promising solution to reduce road accidents and traffic congestion, as well as to optimize the usage of fuel and lane. Reliable and high efficient Vehicleto-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communications are essential to let commercial autonomous driving vehicles be on the road before 2020. The current paper firstly presents the concept of Heterogeneous Vehicular NETworks (HetVNETs) for autonomous driving, in which an improved protocol stac… Show more

“…ud,ji = β V2V ud,ji h V2V ud,ji ∈ C N ×1 denote the channel vector spanning from the i-th V2V transmitter on the j-th road to the d-th V2V receiver on the u-th road, where β V2V ud,ji and h V2V ud,ji represent the large-scale fading and small-scale fading, respectively. The large-scale fading is given by β V2V ud,ji = θ(d V2V ud,ji ) −α , where θ is a constant related to the antenna gain and 1 In this paper, we take the underlay mode as a general scenario to analyze and optimize the performance of the V2V URLLC system [9], [10], [13]. The overlay mode can be regarded as a special case of the underlay mode.…”

“…For example, VANETs support a variety of services and achieve success in a certain aspect such as vehicular collision avoidance system using vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure communication [4]. However, its inherent defects such as unbalanced traffic flow and low bandwidth impact the deployment of urban-traffic management.…”

“…Attention is devoted to high precision positioning [110,111] for quality of applications enhancements and cooperative transmission [112][113][114] to improve channel allocation and resource management in network infrastructure such as base stations and relays. Heterogeneous vehicular networks are also considered [115], where heterogeneity may be in wireless access technologies [116], vertical handovers [117], architectures, and autonomous driving [118]. Attention is also devoted to information acquisition [119] (also with crowd sensing [120,121]) and to information dissemination [122][123][124].…”
