Reliability of fMRI time series: Similarity of neural processing during movie viewing

Abstract: Despite its widespread use in neuroscience, the reliability of fMRI remains insufficiently understood. One powerful way to tap into aspects of fMRI reliability is via the inter-subject correlation (ISC) approach, which exposes different viewers to the same time-locked naturalistic stimulus and assesses the similarity of neural time series. Here we examined the correlations of fMRI time series from 24 participants who watched the same movie clips across three repetitions. This enabled us to examine inter-subjec… Show more

“…A3 ) are roughly similar to those previously reported ( O’Connor et al, 2017 ). Specifically, high reliability in the visual network has been reported ( Schmäalzle et al, 2017 ). An exception is that reliability in the visual network does not differ much in our data between the resting state and video task ( Fig.…”

“…There is also a growing interest in FC evaluated not just during rest but during task performance, and in particular during viewing of natural stimuli such as video ( Elliott et al, 2019 ; O’Connor et al, 2017 ; Schmälzle et al, 2017 ; Vanderwal et al, 2017 ). Therefore we here combine data from resting state as well as viewing of videos.…”

“…Consistent with the existence of such a rule, large individual differences occur in the situated activity associated with health behaviors (e.g., Barsalou, 2019;Dutriaux et al, 2019;Taylor Browne Luka, Dutriaux, Hendry, Stevenson, & Barsalou, 2019;Werner et al, 2019). Large individual differences also occur in neural activity as people perceive complex everyday events associated with situated action (e.g., Huth, de Heer, Griffiths, Theunissen, & Gallant, 2016;Huth, Nishimoto, Vu, & Gallant, 2012;Schmälzle, Imhof, Grall, Flaisch, & Schupp, 2017).…”

“…EEG and fMRI data presented here were averaged across subjects before assessing the reliability of the task-related re-sponses they contain. This form of 'grand-averaging' is well established to analyze evoked potentials in EEG and has recently also been used in fMRI (Schmaelzle et al, 2017). We did not average across subjects in ECoG due to inconsistent electrode montages in each of the five subjects.…”
