Purpose To evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of a commercially available, portable, ultrasonic pachymeter. Methods For the interobserver variability study, 42 healthy subjects underwent repeated ultrasonic pachymetry under topical anaesthesia performed by two observers. For the intraobserver study, another 30 further healthy subjects underwent repeated pachymetry by one of the observers. Agreement was analysed by means of Bland-Altman plots and by determination of the intraclass correlation coefficient. Results For the interobserver variability study, the mean measurement difference between observers was 0.7 lm (95% CI À0.8-2.2 lm) and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.9958 (95% CI 0.9922-0.9977). The Bland-Altman plot showed narrow limits of agreement with respect to central corneal thickness (CCT). For the intraobserver variability study, the mean difference between the repeated measurements was 0.9 lm (95% CI À3.1-1.3 lm). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.9934 (95% CI 0.9863-0.9969). A Bland-Altman plot again showed narrow limits of agreement with respect to CCT. The mean CCT for 72 subjects was 538 lm (95% CI 528-545 lm). Conclusions Measurements of CCT using the BVI Pocket Pachymeter were repeatable and had excellent interobserver reliability. Measurement variation amounted to less than 0.2% assuming a mean CCT of 538 lm.

Purpose To compare the effects of cooled and room temperature BSS Plus solution on the central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior segment inflammation, and corneal endothelium in patients undergoing phacoemulsification. Methods In this prospective, randomized study, 70 consecutive patients undergoing phacoemulsification were assigned to one of two groups: Group 1 (controls) (n ¼ 35) received BSS Plus at a room temperature of 231C and Group 2 (cases; n ¼ 35) received BSS Plus cooled at 101C. In both the groups, the percentage of difference for CCT, absolute change in endothelial cell density, and coefficient of variation (CV) from preoperative to postoperative periods was analysed. The presence of anterior chamber flare and cells were compared postoperatively between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference in percentage change for CCT from preoperative to postoperative days 1, 7, and 30 between the two groups (P ¼ 0.30, P ¼ 0.56, and P ¼ 0.52). There was no statistically significant difference in the ECD loss (P ¼ 0.19) and CV (P ¼ 0.88) at 1 month between the two groups. The influence of the solutions on anterior chamber flare and cells was not statistically significant between the two groups on the first postoperative day (P ¼ 0.17, P ¼ 0.11). Conclusions The temperature of the BSS Plus solution did not affect any parameter of the study. The use of moderately cooled BSS had no detectable effect and benefit on the outcome of the surgery.

RESUMO -O propósito do presente trabalho foi avaliar os valores da espessura corneana central em córneas de ovinos sadios com o microscópio especular de não-contato e paquímetro ultra-sônico. A espessura corneana central foi determinada em 22 olhos de 11 ovinos, inicialmente com microscópio especular de não-contato (Topcon SP-2000P), seguido pelo paquímetro ultra-sônico (Nidek UP-1000). Os valores médios das medidas corneanas centrais foram 654mm e 665mm com o microscópio especular de não contato e o paquímetro ultra-sônico, respectivamente. As medidas da espessura corneana demonstraram que ambos os instrumentos são confiáveis. Palavras-chave:Ovino. Paquimetria. Especular. Ultrasônica. Espessura corneana.ABSTRACT -The purpose of this study was to evaluate the central corneal thickness values in normal ovine with Topcon SP-2000P noncontact specular microscope and ultrasonic pachymeter. Central corneal thickness was detemined in 22 eyes of 11 ovines, first with a noncontact specular microscopy (Topcon SP-2000P), then using an ultrasonic pachgmeter (Nidek UP-1000). The central corneal measurements were 654mm e 665mm with Topcon and ultrasonic pachymeter, respectively. The instruments were reliable in their measurements.
