Motivational factors are among the most important determinants of undertaking and participating in physical activity. An adequate measurement of motivation and the assessment of its initial characteristics form the basis for possible further practical interventions of a compensatory or promotional nature. Considering the above, the main aim of this study was to assess the psychometric properties of the Polish version of the Goal Orientation in Exercise Measure (GOEM), and to determine the association between the task and the ego orientations and selected components of physical activity, i.e., frequency of undertaking, declared time per session and time spent on physical activity. In addition to the typical indices of psychometric assessment, an analysis of the reliability of test items by applying the item response theory (IRT) model was also presented. The study included 318 individuals (173 females, 145 males), aged 21 years on average, undertaking recreational physical activity. The GOEM scale by Petherick and Markland (2008) was used. The model of the Polish version of the GOEM scale fitted the empirical data well (CFI = 0.955). Satisfactory reliability indices were also obtained (task subscale: alpha = 0.83, omega = 0.83; ego subscale: alpha = 0.86, omega = 0.86). Reliability, as assessed by the test-retest method, was ICC = 0.80 for the task subscale and ICC = 0.87 for the ego subscale. The IRT analysis showed that the ego subscale was more precise in the middle level of the trait, while the task subscale provided more information in the low and middle level of the trait and relatively little information in the high level of the trait. The positive associations of the task subscale with the frequency of physical activity and the time spent in a single exercise session were also noted.

The different criteria by which individuals evaluate their competence and define the success (or failure) of their participation in exercise is a topic of interest. The present study aimed to translate and validate the Goal Orientation in Exercise Measure (GOEM) in a sample of Portuguese exercisers. Confirmatory factor analysis and multigroup analyses were developed in order to test the factor structure and measurement invariance of the measure, respectively. The present sample comprised 550 gym and health club exercisers (female = 264; M age = 30.03 ± 10.20), with an attendance of 3.06 times (SD = 1.08) per week, and a mean exercise experience of 37.63 months (SD = 2.37). Current results showed that the measurement model of the GOEM presented adequate fit (total sample model: χ 2 = 108.65, df = 34, B-S p = < .001, SRMR = .045, TLI = .960, CFI = .970, RMSEA = .060). Additionally, measurement invariance was achieved between genders and across different fitness activities. Present results showed that the predictive validity criterion was respected, since task-orientation positively and significantly predicted identified regulation (β = .54) and intrinsic motivation (β = .43), whereas ego-orientation was positively associated with external regulation (β = .46) and amotivation (β = .39). Present findings support the use of the measure for task and ego-orientation assessment, thus allowing further support for the Achievement Goal Theory framework expansion in gym and health clubs research.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of remote education given via telehealth to individuals diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes on exercise goals, physical activity, nutrition, medication habits and diabetes problems. Material and Methods: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with a total of 30 patients with diabetes mellitus (15 tele-education, 15 routine education). Individuals were educated about general information about diabetes, nutrition therapy, exercise, physical activity, drug therapy, and acute/chronic complications. Participants were evaluated with the Mini Nutritional Assessment, International Physical Activity Questionnaire, Goal Orientation in Exercise Measurement, Modified Morisky Medication Adherence Scale and Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale. Results: In terms of MNA scores, only the decrease in the score of routine rehabilitation was significant (p=0.041). The MNA score did not differ between the tele-education and routine rehabilitation groups (p>0.05). Finally, the education program did not affect the other scores (p>0.05). Conclusion: The study results showed that tele-education can only positively affect nutrition. However, both tele-education and routine training provided similar and ineffective results. Future studies could focus on remote education programs delivered through different educational methods.
