The analysis of longevity can support decisions about the length of seed lot storage until commercialization, since this characteristic implies the maintenance of viability over time. Seed longevity is analyzed by the p50 test, which expresses the time to lose 50% of the initial viability. Seeds with high vigor and germination have greater physiological potential and, thus, a greater capacity to maintain quality throughout the storage period. However, there has been little research on the correlations between the analysis of p50 (longevity) and the tests used to measure physiological potential (germination and vigor) of lots, which can be used as a tool to make inferences about longevity using the most traditional tests. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate which tests used to measure the potential of lots can estimate p50. To this end, germination and vigor were evaluated using traditional tests while longevity was assessed in eight soybean seed lots. Correlations and linear regression were tested for the traditional variables versus p50. It was found that the use of accelerated aging, electrical conductivity, and time to 50% radicle protrusion has high potential to estimate longevity as measured by p50.

The usual vigor test of companies for batches of genetic corn seeds is carried out based on the potential of seeds to germinate at low temperatures, not being suitable for the warm regions of the country, since there is a low correlation between laboratory and field results for these cases. An alternative to this method is the GroundEye L800® system, which evaluates vigor by the performance potential of corn seedlings. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the GroundEye L800® equipment in determining the vigor of seeds of the genetic category of corn. Seeds from 36 corn batches were used in this study. The parameters evaluated were germination, radicle emergence test (RET), emergence on flower-bed, besides the image analysis using GroundEye L800® system. RET, the method generally used by companies, showed a significant difference in emergence results compared to those found on flower-bed, with no positive correlation. The GroundEye L800 process and the flower-bed emergence test did not differ statistically. GroundEye L800® equipment is promising for assessing the physiological potential of corn seeds.

Adenocaulon adhaerescens Maxim. is the potentially medicinal species with high antioxidant activity. Morphometric characteristics of achenes (seeds) for the species have been studied in four populations of native distribution range in Primorsky Krai (Russia). The distance from the southernmost (Popova Island) to the northernmost (buffer zone of the Ussuri Nature Reserve) of the seed collection point is about 100 km, and this, of course, is not enough to identify correlation between geographical latitude and seed size. The environmental conditions in all four habitats are also the same-shaded paths in the forest along streams or wet plots, so that light and moisture do not seem to influence the size of the seeds. Studied plants in the fruiting phase had an average height of 83.9 cm, with 70% of the main axis being the inflorescence and the number of lateral axes of the inflorescence ranging from 10 to 28. The size of the leaf at the base of the panicle was, on average, 8.8 × 10.6 cm. Plants on Russky Island have reliably smaller achenes (5.4 × 1.9 mm) than in other studied populations (6.7 × 2.3 mm). It was noted that the length and diameter of the achene vary in the native distribution range at a low level (CV = 10-12%). However, we were surprised to compare our data with ones in the Moscow: in the secondary distribution range, which is almost 9 thousand kilometers away from natural habitats, the average size of seeds of this species has not changed over 70 years of introduction. In the native distribution range, seed productivity of one plant is two to three times higher than in the secondary distribution range formed in the Moscow. This is explained not by the large number of seeds in a head (5-7 seeds), but by the large number of heads formed on the plant (46-77 vr. 25-30 heads).
