Nurses’ Job Burnout: A Hybrid Concept Analysis

Introduction: Job burnout can significantly affect nurses' physical and mental health and the quality of the care services they provide. Yet, there is no clear definition for job burnout in nursing. This study aimed to analyze the concept of nurses' occupational burnout. Methods: This concept analysis was conducted, using the three-phase hybrid model. In the theoretical phase, online databases, namely Iranmedex, Scientific Information Database (SID), Science Direct, MagIran, ProQuest, Web of Sciences, Scopus, and PubMed were searched to retrieve studies published from 2007 to 2018. In the fieldwork phase, twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted with nurses and head-nurses selected from teaching hospitals in Isfahan, Iran. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed through thematic analysis. In the final analytic phase, the findings of the first and the second phases were combined. Results: Based on the findings of the theoretical and the fieldwork phases, job burnout can be defined as, "a state of physical, mental, emotional, and social exhaustion resulting from the negative effects of unmanaged occupational stress and inadequate managerial and social support, which reduces interest in and motivation for work, affects care quality, and results in negative attitudes and behavior towards self, clients, and the work". Conclusion: This study provides an in-depth understanding of the concept of job burnout in the nursing context of Iran. Managers need to develop strategies for job burnout prevention and management based on its contributing factors.

Background: Having enough ability to perform delegated tasks has a crucial role in preventing job-related accidents and medical errors. Excessive workload, particularly multitasking, causes increased physical stress and job dissatisfaction. Pre-hospital emergency technicians play a crucial role in saving patients' lives, therefore assessing their mental workload and job satisfaction is highly important. Objectives: The current study aimed to investigate the mental workload of pre-hospital emergency technicians working in hospitals in the city of Ahvaz and its association with job satisfaction. Methods: In this study, 252 pre-hospital emergency technicians were studied. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) was used to assess the mental workload. The Job Descriptive Index (JDI) questionnaire was used to collect information regarding job satisfaction. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA and chi-square tests. Analyses were performed using SPSS version 22.0. Results: Participants had a moderate level of workload (mean score: 5296). The highest and lowest scores were related to mental demand (69.96 ± 19) and physical demand (32.35 ± 14.3), respectively. Also, participants had a moderate level of job satisfaction, and there was a significant association between job satisfaction and mental demand and frustration (P < 0.05). Conclusions: This study demonstrated an association between job satisfaction and mental demand and frustration in pre-hospital emergency technicians. Therefore, developing appropriate strategies is necessary.

Background: Patients’ satisfaction is a fundamental factor in the quality of nursing care. The emergence of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the highly contagious virus can affect nursing care by increasing the number of care-seekers. This study aimed to determine the patients’ satisfaction and related factors in patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in Taleghani Hospital, Urmia-Iran, in 2020.Methods: This descriptive correlational study was conducted on 196 patients with COVID-19 hospitalized in Taleghani Hospital, Urmia. Purposive convenient sampling was used to recruit participants. Study participants completed Patient Satisfaction Instrument (PSI) and demographics questionnaires. Data were analyzed with SPSS software version 25.0.Results: The majority of patients (68.9%) were moderately satisfied with nursing care. Based on Pearson Correlation Analysis, only residential status had a significant inverse relationship with satisfaction level in patients with COVID-19 (r = -0.0238, P=0.001).Conclusion: The patients’ satisfaction with nursing care was mostly at a moderate level. Thus, there is a need to educate health personnel and nurses in particular and motivate them to have active participation in achieving patients’ satisfaction with COVID-19. Notably, only the institutes that take patients’ satisfaction as a top priority can succeed in a competitive market of health services.
