Reiter's syndrome followingshigella flexneri 2a

Abstract: Shigellu Jlexneri 2a was isolated from a patient with Reiter's syndrome (RS) following a family outbreak of traveler's diarrhea. Among 3 members at risk, only the patient was positive for HLA-B27. Data from 3 similar families support the hypothesis that susceptibility to R S is genetically transmitted. It is urged that every effort be made to culture and subtype Shigellu and other enteric pathogens in RS following diarrhea. Concurrently, the patient had hepatitis, interpreted as a parallel enteric infection.Cl… Show more

“…Considering that, with the exception of the one case that is still symptomatic, only 34 days were lost due to turista out of the 69 man years represented in the sample (or one day lost per 1000 days worked), turista cannot be taken as a serious occupational hazard for seafarers or their Downloaded by [The University Of Melbourne Libraries] at 21:25 16 June 2016 employers. The inclusion of a question pertaining to urinary, arthritic and opthalmic sequelae was prompted by reports in the literature of Reiter's Syndrome following travellers' diarrhoea caused by Shigella and occasionally Salmonella [1,2,3]. Reiter's Syndrome is primarily arthritic with urinary, opthalmic and intestinal features.…”
