Reinforced concrete structural corrosion monitoring using Hi-Bi photonic crystal fibres in a fiber loop structure

Abstract: A novel sensing approach has been developed for in-situ corrosion monitoring of steel in reinforced concrete structures, using a fibre loop interferometer sensor system based on a Hi-Bi photonic crystal fibre (PCF). To do so an accurate fibre alignment procedure has been implemented in order to improve the performance of the sensor system embedded into the concrete structure when it is subjected to an accelerated corrosion test. The positive results obtained have confirmed the effectiveness of such a sensor sy… Show more

“…Te levels of the resulting broadening were also modeled and assessed [32][33][34][35]. Other in situ corrosion monitoring fber optic sensors use a fber loop interferometer based on a photonic crystal fber (PCF) [44,45], where the pressure/force change instigated by corrosion modulates the birefringence. Another interesting corrosion discovery solution is presented in [46], where a measuring cell employing an unclad sapphire fber waveguide operating in the visible spectral range is capable of detecting iron ions released due to the formation of rust.…”
