A B S T R A C TThis research aimed to evaluate the yield and economic viability of three crop cycles of the banana cv. 'Prata Anã' in association with perennial herbaceous legumes, natural vegetation, or compared with the conventional management. The research was conducted using a complete randomized block design with split-split plots and four replicates. The plots were formed by four irrigation depths: 50, 75, 100 and 125% of crop evapotranspiration, and the subplots by cover crops (Calopogonium muconoides, Pueraria phaseoloides, and natural cover without N addition) or no cover crops with addition of N fertilization (conventional management). The subsubplots were formed by the second, third and fourth banana production cycles. Yield and economic viability of the cultivation were estimated for a period of seven years. The conventional management promoted greater yield and economic viability in the cultivation of 'Prata Anã' banana, due to the N fertilization. Managements with leguminous cover crops were also economically viable, but they should be investigated in combination with N fertilization and compared with the conventional method.Produtividade e viabilidade econômica da bananeira associada com plantas de cobertura R E S U M O Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, avaliar a produtividade e a viabilidade econômica em três ciclos da bananeira cv. Prata Anã em associação com leguminosas herbáceas perenes, vegetação nativa ou comparadas com o manejo convencional. A pesquisa foi conduzida utilizando-se delineamento em blocos casualizados com parcelas subsubdivididas com quatro repetições. As parcelas foram formadas por quatro lâminas de irrigação: 50, 75, 100 e 125% da evapotranspiração da cultura e as subparcelas por plantas de cobertura (Calopogonium mucunoides, Pueraria phaseoloides e vegetação espontânea sem adição de N) ou tratamento com adubação nitrogenada sem plantas de cobertura (manejo convencional). As subsubparcelas foram representadas pelos segundo, terceiro e quarto ciclos de produção da bananeira. Foram estimadas a produtividade e a viabilidade econômica do cultivo para um período de sete anos. O manejo convencional proporcionou maior produtividade e viabilidade econômica no cultivo da bananeira Prata Anã em função da adubação nitrogenada. Manejos com plantas de cobertura leguminosas também foram viáveis economicamente mas devem ser investigados em combinação com a adubação nitrogenada e comparada com o método convencional.

Cover crops are increasingly being used for weed suppression and to enhance the sustainability of agro-ecosystems. However, the suitability of cover crops for weed suppression in integrated and organic conservation tillage systems is still poorly investigated. Therefore, a 2-year field study at eight sites was conducted to test the weed suppressive potential of six legume-based cover crops, with the aim to reduce herbicide input or mechanical weed management interventions. In all experiments, cover crops were directly sown after cereals before next year's main crop (grain maize or sunflower). The presence of cover crops caused a 96% to 100% reduction of weed dry matter at the four sites managed under integrated production, while effects were lower at the four sited managed under organic production, ranging from 19% to 87%. Cover crops that covered soil quickly and which produced much dry matter had the best weed suppressive potential. However, their weed suppressing effect was difficult to predict, as it depended on the year of the investigation, experimental site, cover crop species, the speed of soil cover in autumn and the density of the resulting mulch layer in spring. The study demonstrated that cover crops are a useful tool to suppress weeds under integrated and organic conservation tillage practices. Our recommendation for supporting weed management in conservation tillage systems is to use locally adapted cover crops that have rapid establishment, good soil coverage and high dry matter production. As subparcelas em número de três, foram compostas por: 1 -pulverização apenas de herbicida de manejo antes da semeadura do milho; 2 -herbicida de manejo após a semeadura do milho + herbicida residual, e 3 -testemunha sem aplicação de herbicidas. As coberturas mortas de aveia-preta e nabo-forrageiro proporcionam as menores densidades de plantas daninhas e acúmulos de massa seca da comunidade infestante, independente da aplicação ou não de herbicidas. Houve uma maior germinação de B. pilosa nas parcelas mantidas com a cobertura de tremoço, com exceção das subparcelas onde se aplicou herbicida em pré-emergência, o que evidencia um efeito estimulante da cobertura morta. O emprego de algumas espécies na formação da cobertura morta para o plantio direto pode dispensar ou reduzir a quantidade de herbicidas necessária para o controle das plantas daninhas. ABSTRACT -The correct choice of cover crops improves the sustainability of a farming system, as it can enhance the use of herbicides, reduce weed infestation and improve crop performance. With the aim of studying the effect of winter mulches and the use of herbicides on a community of weeds in maize, a study was carried out in a completely randomised design where the treatments were arranged in a scheme of split lots with four replications. The lots, six in number, comprised the following winter crops: Lupinus albus, sativos Lathyrus, Triticum aestivum, Avena strigosa, Raphanus sativus, and a control kept fallow. The three sub-lots comprised, 1 -spraying the management herbicide before sowing the maize, 2 -management herbicide after sowing the maize + residual herbicide, and 3 -control without the application of herbicide. Mulches of black oat and forage turnip gave the lowest weed densities and accumulations of dry weight in the weed community, irrespective of the application of herbicide. There was greater germination of B. pilosa in the lots maintained with a cover of lupins, with the exception of those sub-lots where herbicide was applied pre-emergence, demonstrating the stimulating effect of mulch. The use of certain species in the formation of mulch under direct planting can dispense with or reduce the amount of herbicides needed for weed control.
