Regional Responses of Lightning Activities to Relative Humidity of the Surface

Abstract: Global flash activity shows great contrast in different regions. Temperature and humidity are the essential meteorological factors that result in this difference. The regional response of lightning activities to the relative humidity (RH) is examined at different longitudes and latitudes using lightning data based on satellite and NCEP metrological observations (from 1995 to 2002). The result indicates that lightning activities respond positively to RH within longitudinal belts where RH is more than 74% and ne… Show more

“…This indicates that the effect of surface relative humidity on lightning activity does not change much under relatively clean or polluted conditions. This result is consistent with the study of Xiong et al (2006) which found that lightning activities response to surface relative humidity with a watershed of about 72-74%. The increase of relative humidity will lead to the enhancement of the convection and lightning activity (Shi et al, 2018).…”

“…The east part is located in the plain by the sea, while the west part is mostly in the plateau. However, lightning activity can also be affected by many other meteorological factors like CAPE, temperature, relative humidity (Williams, 1994;Xiong et al, 2006;Bang and Zipser, 2016), and so on. The presence of a large number of cities and intensive human activities in the eastern plain region leads to the emission of a large number of air pollutants, resulting in higher concentrations of particulate matter over the eastern area.…”

“…This indicates the important role of surface heat flux in converting CAPE into kinetic energy of updraft in the deep convective systems (Yuan and Qie, 2005;Satori et al, 2009). Williams et al (2005) attribute the increase in lightning activity to the height of thundercloud base, while Xiong et al (2006) suggest that the lightning activity inhibits under high humid environment. Carey and Buffalo (2007) relates lightning activity to the dryness in the atmosphere.…”
