Regional distribution and incidence of human papillomavirus infections among heterosexual men and women with multiple sexual partners: a prospective study.

Abstract: Conclusions-HPV infection was found to be a multicentric genital andlor anorectal event both in women and men. The oral presence of HPV DNA was detected only once in one of the participants. In women persistent HPV infection was more common than in men. Independent predictors for presence of HPV DNA in women were diagnosis of condylomata acuminata, reporting genital dermatologic abnormalties and age. Incidence of HPV infection in women turned out to be 47*1 infections per 100 person-years and for men 50.5 per … Show more

“…In the present study, as in others [10,13,16,36], age was not associated with HPV prevalence among men. In women, HPV infection declines with increasing age, with a smaller postmenopausal peak observed in some populations [37][38][39][40].…”

“…Among studies that have used PCR to detect penile HPV DNA in healthy men, sampling methodologies have been inconsistent. Nonetheless, results from these diverse investigations have suggested that penile HPV in sexually active men is at least as prevalent as cervical HPV is among women [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…Time to clearance depends both on virus-and host-related factors (6), with possibly longer persistence of high-risk (oncogenic) HPV types, such as HPV-16, compared to low-risk types (7), and shorter persistence in heterosexual men compared to women (8)(9)(10)(11). In immunocompromised people, persistent HPV infection is more common (12,13).…”

“…To our knowledge, there are 9 documented scientific articles on 8 prospective studies on HPV infection in men (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15). All of them provide information on incidence rates and 8 describe the persistence or clearance of HPV (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(13)(14)(15).…”
