HPV in Female Partners Increases Risk of Incident HPV Infection Acquisition in Heterosexual Men in Rural Central Mexico

Abstract: Background: Knowledge about the incidence, clearance, and factors associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection in men is lacking, and much of what is available focuses on high-risk groups. Methods: A prospective cohort study was carried out with 504 heterosexual males from Mexico State, Mexico. Participants were monitored for 4 years at intervals of approximately 4 months, with a median total duration of follow-up of 19.8 months. The presence of cervical HPV in female sexual partners was evaluated as a… Show more

“…The incidence rate for any HPV at the genitals was, 51.8, 25.0, and 35.7 per 100 person years (py) among men from Brazil, Mexico, and the US, respectively. These are similar to estimates provided in a 2016 systematic review of genital HPV incidence and duration (13) which reports incidence rates of any HPV from 14.8 per 100py among men from Mexico (24) to 46.1 per 100py among men from the US (25). Reported duration of any HPV type infection in the HIM Study (range 6.5–7.0 months) was also comparable to estimates provided in the systematic review by country with duration ranging from 5.1–5.9 months (13, 24, 25).…”

“…5,[11][12][13] This study was performed in women attending gynecology and obstetrics clinics for routine testing and involves nine pathogens detected by molecular, serological and microbiological methods. Thus, contributing to increase the information available about STIs in Mexico.…”

“…2 In Mexico, STIs are one of the top five diseases on demand for medical care and are among the top ten causes of general morbidity in the group of 15-44 years old individuals, with an average of 220 000 cases annually. 3 Although there are some STI studies in Mexico, 4,5 the frequency of STIs is not well known. There are few studies on the detection of these microorganisms by PCR, correlated coinfections, and risk factors involved.…”

“…It shows that higher viral load of both high-risk and low-risk HPV infection was associated with the risk of new detection of a specific genotype in the other partner [21]. In addition to actual transmission studies, cervical HPV infection in a man’s female sexual partner has been found to be a risk for the man’s genital HPV infection [24]. Other risk factors for type-specific concordance were (1) an increasing number of younger couples, (2) persistent HPV infection, (3) higher frequency of sexual intercourse, (4) rising number of spouse’s lifetime sexual partners, as well as (5) sexual relations with prostitutes [9, 14, 19, 25].…”
