Seroepidemiology of High-Risk HPV in HIV-Negative and HIV-Infected MSM: The H2M Study

Abstract: Background: Men who have sex with men (MSM), in particular HIV-infected MSM, are at increased risk for diseases related to human papilloma virus (HPV). Our goal was to assess the effect of HIV status on the presence of type-specific antibodies against seven high-risk HPV types in HPV-unvaccinated MSM. Moreover, we compared determinants of HPV seropositivity between HIV-negative and HIV-infected MSM.Methods: MSM !18 years of age were recruited from the Amsterdam Cohort Studies, a sexually transmitted infection … Show more

“…High type-specific seroprevalences observed in the SHCS are consistent with those reported in other HIV-positive MSM [6,7,9,27], albeit with different serological assays. Based on the same assay and cutoff definition, HPV6 (53%) and 11 (46%) seroprevalence in the SHCS was similar to that reported in 245 HIV-positive MSM in Australia (53 and 48%) [8].…”

“…This corroborates lack of association of CD4 þ cell counts with HPV seroprevalence in other HIV-positive MSM [6,7,9] and HIV-positive women [28] and suggests that HAART-related increases in detectable HPV immune responses are not mediated solely via CD4 þ cell counts. Indeed, we have described a similar phenomenon for Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus antibodies in these samples [18].…”

“…Their median CD4 cell count at enrollment was 540 cells/mm 3 (IQR 410-697); 87% used combination antiretroviral therapy. A detailed description of the study population has been published previously (20,25).…”

“…More recent publications have highlighted the importance of age of sexual debut, [8] marital status, [29] high number of lifetime sexual partners, [5,30,31] number of recent sexual partners, [30] longer history of sexual activity, [30] route of exposure, [26,30,32] and having sex with men [32][33][34] as risk factors for anogenital HPV infection. Similar observations about sexual risk behaviour and an association with HPV have been made in studies of men in SSA.…”
