Reducing the risk of infection for transrectal prostate biopsy with povidone–iodine: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract: Rectal disinfection with PI provides a safe and effective method to reduce the risk of infectious complications following TRPB, regardless of mono-prophylaxis and combined prophylaxis with PI and ATB. Large, multicenter, and prospective RCTs of good quality trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of PI.

“…A significant decrease in infectious complications (p=0.001) was observed in patients who received an enema. These collective prior results [13,14,15,16] indicate that a prebiopsy povidone-iodine enema could reduce the risk of infectious complications after TRUS-guided prostate biopsy. We summarized and compared the results of prior studies with those of our study in Table 3.…”

“…Other approaches and practices that have been studied include rectal cleansing, enemas and disinfectants. The literature remains inconclusive on the effectiveness of these strategies in reducing infective complication post‐TRPB . Similarly, there has been no evidence to suggest that disinfecting biopsy needles reduce TRPB‐related infections .…”
