“…[110] Previous research showed that the solubility and the rate of the Ce IV /Ce III reaction in aqueous H 2 SO 4 is very limited. [111] Thereaction rate is high in aqueous HNO 3 ,a nd 1m cerium solutions can be prepared; [112,113] however, nitrate is slightly reduced, which causes irreversible side reactions in the electrolyte.Abattery setup without amembrane has an efficiency of up to 76 %at 20 mA cm À2 and ac urrent efficiency of 90 %. [114] Thec erium concentration was,h owever, only 0.2 m,h ence more side reactions and therefore lower efficiency can be expected at high concentrations.W ith aN AFION-based RFB,a ne fficiency of 39 %w as achieved with 0.8 m Ce III in 4 m MSA at 50 mA cm À2 after 57 charge/discharge cycles.…”

“…The table shows that the standard potential for the oxidation of Ce(III) ions using lead electrodes in the three-electrode arrangement and the reduction potential of Ce (IV) Table 2, the pseudoNernstian behaviour of this system indicates a clear deviation from the thermodynamically standard value E o e . Indeed, complexation of the redox species and solvent interactions affect the redox potential as it depends on the activity coefficients that, in turn, vary with the ionic strength of the solution (Paulenova et al, 2002). The similarity between the theoretical and experimental values of the slope for the oxidation of Ce(III) ions suggest a single electron transfer process whereas the larger difference of the slope value from the reduction of Ce(IV) suggests a more complex electron transfer.…”

“…, with a redox potential of 1.15 V vs. Ag/AgCl/3.5 M KCl and which has been widely studied as positive electrolyte in redox flow batteries [24][25][26] was selected as the electroactive species in order to build asymmetric hybrid capacitors that use an activated carbon (AC) in the negative electrode and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) or a modified graphite felt (GF) in the positive one.…”
