Redesign and reuse in compositional knowledge-based systems

Abstract: The paper introduces a task model for the redesign of compositional knowledge-based systems based on a generic task model of design. A generic task model of design provides an abstract description of a design task and a generic structure which can be refined for design tasks in specific domains of application. A generic task model of design, shown to incorporate redesign, is presented and refined to a task model for the redesign of compositional knowledge-based systems. The applicability of this task model is … Show more

“…Other CBR applications included flight condition monitoring and fault diagnosis for aircraft engine (Vingerhoeds et al, 1995). In knowledge-based approach for task implementation, many approaches have been reported for knowledge engineering in design task (Johnson et al, 1988;Schreiber et al, 1994;Brazier et al, 1996). In these research and developments, multilayered modeling approaches and the object-oriented methods are commonly used to construct knowledge, design process, and product structure.…”

“…So far several theories of ID have been presented, including [4], [9], and [16]. These developments share a common consensus of design, shown by Figure 1, where transformation occurs from a function space to an attribute space via a meta-model space where the steps or processes of design are performed [16].…”

“…Similar to Gero's (1990) model, synthesis and evaluation can both be modelled as subcomponents of DOD-modification. Brazier, van Langen, Treur and Wijngaards (1995c) show how synthesis by case-based reasoning can be modelled as a decomposition of the GTMD. Takeda, Veerkamp, Tomiyama and Yoshikawa (1990) have developed a cognitive design model, constructed from unit design cycles of which each consists of five subtasks:…”
