Recycled concrete aggregate as a road base material

Abstract: Natural crushed aggregate (NCA) is the most common material for aggregate throughout the world. The consumption of the NCA itself is rising up through the years. Concrete structures and road construction are some of the most consuming aggregate material, especially NCA. Therefore, aggregate such as recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) has become an alternative material for some particular civil construction. The implementation of RCA as road construction material has been raised for a long time ago especially in … Show more

“…Different mixtures of concrete will affect the properties of RCA even for a small difference, especially for the physical properties. In this research previously, the RCA has a specific gravity (SSD) of 2,420 kg/m 3 [13] while research from Bhuiyan shows a slightly different value of about 2,480 kg/m 3 [15]. A slightly different result also occurs in water absorption.…”

“…The static load tests were conducted in Highway and Transportation Laboratory of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. Some properties were given from previous research such as specific gravity, water absorption, maximum dry density (MDD), and optimum moisture content (OMC) [13]. Sub-base and subgrade were not the main focus on this research, hence, the parameter taken from those only the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) value as the representative for compacted material strength.…”

“…The first method is based on the reuse of materials from the demolition of concrete structures. Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is increasingly used in highway construction, which is the subject of numerous scientific studies [13][14][15][16][17][18]. A second important research direction is the use of soil reinforcement.…”

“…Recycled aggregate differs from natural sand and gravel because the recycled aggregate produces a greater crushing effect when subjected to low loading. Particle crushing leads to a change in the recycled aggregate gradation, affects the thickness and fineness proportion, alters the overall structure of recycled aggregate, and influences the recycled aggregate's strength and mechanical deformation properties [5][6][7][8].…”
