One hundred random oat (Avena sativa L .) lines from a base (C0) and each of three populations (C l, C2, and C3) improved for groat (caryopsis) oil content by phenotypic recurrent selection were evaluated for correlated changes in several unselected agronomic traits . In addition, the parents of the base population and four check varieties were evaluated for the same traits . Phenotypic recurrent selection for high groat-oil content resulted in no significant correlated response in mean expression of any trait . Mean grain yield, biomass, groat yield, and harvest index of the improved populations were equal or superior to the mean of the parents and, with the exception of harvest index, equivalent to the mean of the check varieties . Mean test weight and seed weight of all populations were lower than for parents or check varieties . Selection for high groat-oil content caused a decline in genotypic variance for test weight and groat fraction, but reductions in genotypic variance for heading date and plant height may have resulted from culling for good agronomic type . Broad-sense heritability remained moderate to high for all traits except groat fraction . Phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients revealed negative, though mostly nonsignificant, relationships between groat-oil content and several traits, which may reflect a purported bioenergetic limitation to increasing groat-oil content in oats . Oil yield, however, was positively correlated with grain and groat yield, groat fraction, biomass, and harvest index . Results suggest that development of high-oil oat cultivars with current levels of production traits via phenotypic recurrent selection is possible .

Kervella et al (1991) made a bibliographic review of the experiments, covering papers published up to 1989. The feasibility of recurrent selection and the interest of applying it to pure line value breeding was demonstrated. Yet a number of different points still had to be optimized: intercrossing, early generation selection and multitrait selection. A complementary review which takes into account papers from 1990 to 1992 is presented here. Some older papers which did not appear in the first review are also analyzed. An evolution in the approaches, the methodologies and concerns of the authors is emphasized. Scheme efficiency is assessed; problems which remain to be solved and the limits of the experiments are discussed. recurrent selection / autogamous species / genetic gain / pure line value

1. Naked oats belong to the same species as 'common oats', Avena sativa, but have a non-lignified husk which readily becomes detached during harvesting. The absence of the indigestible husk can be predicted to give an increased metabolisable energy (ME) content for poultry. 2. Measurements of true metabolisable energy (TME N ) were performed on 3-week-old broiler chicks (Cobb males), adult cockerels (ISA Brown, greater than one year old) and 7-week-old turkeys (BUT T8 males). The measurements were repeated in 2000, 2001 and 2002, with some measurements on a subset of varieties in 2004. 3. High-oil naked oat lines yielded 12% more energy (TME N ) than wheat. Naked oats, excluding the experimental high-oil lines, yielded 8Á5% more energy than simultaneously assayed wheat samples. 4. In samples from the 2004 harvest, conventional oats gave TME N values about 13% lower than those of wheat. 5. The addition of -glucanase produced an increase of about 4% in the apparent metabolisable energy (AME) of oats for broiler chickens. This effect was associated with a 70% decrease in the jejunal viscosity of broilers receiving a 500 g/kg naked-oat diet. 6. The oil content of naked oats was about 5 times greater than that of wheat, with the high-oil lines rising to more than 6 times greater. Naked oats had a lower starch content than wheat but not sufficiently lower to negate the energy benefits of the higher oil content. The crude protein (CP) contents of naked oats were similar to those of wheat, with the high-oil varieties tending to be higher in CP also.
