Naked oats: metabolisable energy yield from a range of varieties in broilers, cockerels and turkeys

Abstract: 1. Naked oats belong to the same species as 'common oats', Avena sativa, but have a non-lignified husk which readily becomes detached during harvesting. The absence of the indigestible husk can be predicted to give an increased metabolisable energy (ME) content for poultry. 2. Measurements of true metabolisable energy (TME N ) were performed on 3-week-old broiler chicks (Cobb males), adult cockerels (ISA Brown, greater than one year old) and 7-week-old turkeys (BUT T8 males). The measurements were repeated in … Show more

“…The SECM was included in the study for comparison with EECM. The corn-soybean meal-based basal diet was fed to determine nutrient digestibility and retention by the substitution method (MacLeod et al, 2008). The low-protein casein-cornstarch-based diet was fed to estimate basal endogenous AA losses for determining standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of AA.…”

“…In the absence of variety-related physiological effects, producers should be guided by agronomic characteristics in variety selection, as higher yields will reduce the cost of hulless oat grain. At the same time, however, hulless oat varieties exist which show nutritional concentrations beyond the range of those studied here (Macleod et al, 2008). Such varieties may be sufficiently different to give rise to more pronounced effects on feed performance, positive or negative.…”

“…The ME intake influences the broiler's feed intake and growth performance (Leeson and Summers, 2001;Morris, 2004) that's why poultry diets are formulated to fulfill bird's ME requirement (Nadeem et al, 2005). Precise and accurate assessment of feed ingredient's ME is mandatory to prepare a balanced diet with a definite calorific concentration (Scott et al, 1998;Nadeem et al, 2005;Macleod et al, 2008). The feed ingredient's nutrient composition influences its calorific value (Toghyani et al, 2014) and this nutrient composition is affected by varying plant genetics, soil conditions, agronomic practices and climatic changes (Ravindran et al, 2014).…”
