Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis with lung involvement

Abstract: Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare disease caused by human papillomavirus. Aggressive forms of RRP require repeated cytoreductive surgery to restore airway patency. Tracheal disease is even less common and lung parenchyma is involved in less than 1% of patients. We present reports of three cases of RRP with progressive lung disease in adult patients.

“…Although the most common sites of this benign tumor have been proposed to be the soft palate, lip and gingiva (1,11), the tongue was suggested to be the most common site (8,10). However, squamous cell papilloma has also been documented to occur in the trachea, nasal cavity, sinuses, external auditory canal, esophagus and throat (12)(13)(14). The majority of cases are characterized by the absence of a clear unified set of symptoms, with clinical manifestations typically arising from secondary symptoms caused by physical obstruction.…”

“…La PRR, conocida como una neoplasia benigna de la laringe, es causada por el virus del VPH (7,(12)(13)(14)(15) . La frecuencia de PRR es más del doble en la población juvenil comparado con los adultos (5) ; además la edad temprana es el factor más importante de gravedad de la enfermedad (16) .…”

“…RRP is a rare disorder and involvement of the lungs is very rare [1][2][3]7]. Although the disease is benign, it can lead to severe morbidity and mortality due to airway obstruction and malignant transformation to carcinoma in the affected organs [1][2][3]5].…”

“…Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare disease characterized by recurrent growth of papillomas primarily in the larynx and occasionally in other parts of the aerodigestive tract [1,2]. Although RRP is a benign disease, malignant transformation to squamous cell carcinoma has been described [2][3][4][5]. RRP is caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) subtypes 6 or 11, of which subtype 11 more often leads to severe affection of the larynx, trachea and bronchi and malignant transformation [2,3].…”
