Recurrence of tuberculosis after hip replacement 58 years after primary infection

Abstract: STRESZCZENIEW pracy przedstawiono przypadek chorego, lat 73, po przebytej gruźlicy stawu biodrowego w dzieciństwie, u którego założono endoprotezę Exeter. Show more

“…In the past, a correlation has been reported between the reactivation of pulmonary TB and gastrectomy [14,15]; the pathogenesis remained speculative. Cases of extra-pulmonary TB reactivation after surgery of the hip have been reported [16,17]. To our knowledge, no cases have been described of pulmonary TB reactivation just after surgery and/or invasive procedures on the chest; it is, however, plausible that repeated minor and major surgical procedures, with the reactivation of a latent infection, may have facilitated local MTC diffusion.…”

“…The authors are critical of this type of operation, since there is an increased risk of recurrence of infection. The authors described the process of reactivation of tuberculosis after total hip replacement 58 years after primary infection [16].…”

“…M Kaya et al presented a case of peri-prosthetic tuberculous infection in the patient with history of THA for osteoarthritis performed 9 years earlier (Kaya et al 2006 ). Walczak P et al presented a case report of a patient with a history of tuberculous hip in 58 years earlier who underwent THA 9 years before (Walczak et al 2012 ). Thus proper prophylactic measures are crucial while undertaking this treatment method.…”
