Recurrence after incisional hernia repair: Results and risk factors

Abstract: A relatively low success rate in recurrent incisional hernia repair has prompted us to review the effects of certain risk factors on the long-term outcome of our cases. In this study, 109 recurrent incisional hernias were repaired and reviewed between 7 and 92 months after the operation. The recurrence rate was 45.0%. Many conditions that have been implicated as causal factors in the occurrence of incisional hernias were not found to be associated with recurrence after repair. However, chronic constipation was… Show more

“…Only for big or monstrous hernias was the method of additional strengthening of the frontal abdominal wall by implantation of auto-and alloplastic material recommended. During the last 10-15 years, numerous retrospective studies about "simple hernioplasty" were published [5,19,20,22,31,38,43,45,56]. Table 1 shows the results of these studies, with recurrence rates ranging between 25% and 55%.…”

“…Many incisional hernias are asymptomatic but presence of symptoms is associated with major morbidity. It remains a surgical challenge for most surgeons given the financial cost of repair and high recurrence rates [11].…”

“…Key words: Incisional hernia -Suprapubic ventral hernia -Parapubic hernia -Pfannenstiel incisionLaparoscopic repair -Mesh fixation -Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) Incisional hernias develop in 11-20% of patients undergoing laparotomy; after a primary repair, these hernias can recur in 45% of patients [4,14,20]. Since the development of laparoscopic techniques, the recurrence rate for ventral hernia repair has frequently been reported to be <4% [2,6,16,18].…”
