Phosphorus is a nonrenewable and irreplaceable limited resource, and over 90% of phosphorus in influenttransfers into sludge in wastewater treatment plants. In this study, thermally activated peroxydisulfate (TAP) treatment was combined with struvite precipitation to enhance waste activated sludge (WAS) dewaterability and phosphorus recovery. TAP simultaneously enhanced dewaterability and solubilization of WAS. The optimal conditions of TAP treatment were PDS dosage 2.0 mmol/g TSS, 80 °C, pH 4.0~7.0 and 40 min, which enhanced dewaterability (capillary suction time (CST) from 94.2 s to 28.5 s) and solubilization (PO43−-P 177.71 mg/L, NH4+-N 287.22 mg/L and SCOD 10754 mg/L). Radical oxidation disintegrated tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) and further released bound water. The acidification effect neutralized the negative surface charge of colloid particles. Compared with thermal hydrolysis, TAP effectively promoted the release of PO43−, NH4+ and SCOD. Cation exchange removed most Ca and Al of the TAP treated supernatant. The optimal conditions of struvite precipitation were Mg/P 1.4 and pH 10.0, which achieved phosphorus recovery of 95.06% and struvite purity of 94.94%. The income obtained by struvite adequately covers the cost of struvite precipitation and the cost of WAS treatment is acceptable.

Although landfill leachate is a small volumetric fraction compared to municipal wastewater, its complexity raises concerns for researchers and practitioners. Emerging and novel treatment technologies are being investigated to address landfill leachate treatment challenges. In the past decade, leachate research shifted from the removal of contaminants to the simultaneous recovery of resources and removal of contaminants. While resource recovery is appealing, it is also questionable due to the economic feasibility and post-environmental impact of applied resources. Various emerging contaminants may remain in recovered resources, making recovery a less preferred option. Because of the ineffectiveness of biological treatment of emerging contaminants, such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, leachate cotreatment has been restricted in some wastewater treatment plants. Thus, in the wake of emerging contaminants and stringent regulations, it seems wiser to develop effective, integrated leachate treatments in lieu of widely practiced biological cotreatment. The solid waste industry needs viable, cost-efficient, and readily executable technologies to effectively handle the upcoming need. Thus, in this paper, academic and industry experts discuss the progress, challenges, and future of leachate treatment. This paper provides a forward-thinking evaluation of the past decade’s advancements and challenges in the field of landfill leachate treatment.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) presents a promising technology to recover energy from sewage sludge and manure as bio-crude oil. The liquid and solid phases after HTL are considered as byproducts; however, the latter is rich in nutrients, which offers a possibility for nutrient recovery and manufacturing of valuable products. This study focuses on the simultaneous recovery of phosphate and ammoniacal nitrogen as struvite by combining the liquid HTL byproduct and leachate from the solid HTL byproduct. To implement a flexible struvite-producing unit, the effect of an inlet-mixed solution composition on the struvite precipitation was investigated on a laboratory scale and preferable operating conditions were identified. These operating conditions were used afterward to evaluate and adapt an air-agitated system for struvite precipitation subsequent to the HTL production chain. Moreover, the precipitation process in the air-agitated system was evaluated using synthetic model solutions compared to real HTL byproducts to offer insight into the effect of impurities on the product quality. The product, which has a struvite content of more than 75 wt %, was manufactured from the HTL byproducts of manure and sewage sludge as well. It has potential for use as a fertilizer based on its elemental composition but the use of citric acid was found to be effective to improve the quality of the product, especially of sewage sludge. The results showed that the air-agitated system could be effectively implemented in the HTL production chain. It has the potential to enhance features of the product, leading to a ready-to-use fertilizer in shape (particle size) and quality (struvite content).
