“…Catchpole and Faurer (1983) analyzed freezing and ice breaking dates in the Hudson Bay. They have also been very useful in the analysis of storms and hurricanes (Mock et al, 2010;Vaquero et al, 2008;Wheeler et al, 2009). Chenoweth (2001) used them to estimate the impact of two major volcanic eruptions in the first half of the 19 th century.…”

“…One essential project is to extend HURDAT back before 1851 to earlier in the nineteenth, eighteenth, and even seventeenth centuries. Such efforts are under way and have begun to yield important results (e.g., Chenoweth 2007;Mock 2008;Wheeler et al 2009). This may lead to a complete dataset of U.S. landfalling hurricanes for the Atlantic coast from Georgia to New England, as well as for portions of the Caribbean back to at least 1800, given the relatively high density of population extending that far into the past.…”

“…Wheeler et al . () reconstructed from contemporary records the trajectory of a hurricane in 1680 that made an extratropical transition to the North Atlantic. Kington () described a windstorm that occurred on 1–2 October 1697 and Wheeler () a great storm in November 1703 in the British Isles.…”

“…For example, Pfeifer (2015) addressed a severe storm on 19 December 1660 over northern Holland by means of two poems written after it. Wheeler et al (2009) reconstructed from contemporary records the trajectory of a hurricane in 1680 that made an extratropical transition to the North Atlantic. Kington (1998) described a windstorm that occurred on 1-2 October 1697 and Wheeler (2003) a great storm in November 1703 in the British Isles.…”
