Recent Progress in the Development of Multifunctional Nanoplatform for Precise Tumor Phototherapy

Abstract: Phototherapy, including photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy, mainly relies on phototherapeutic agents (PAs) to produce heat or toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) to kill tumors. It has attracted wide attention due to its merits of noninvasive properties and negligible drug resistance. However, the phototoxicity of conventional PAs is one of the main challenges for its potential clinical application. This is mainly caused by the uncontrolled distribution of PA in vivo, as well as the inevitable damag… Show more

“…AuNRs were incorporated into mesoporous silica [97,98], biodegradable polymeric matrix [99], and liposomes to facilitate the targeted release of ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes [100]. For more detailed information, the readers are referred to resent original papers [101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109] and related citations in recent reviews [77,[110][111][112][113][114][115].…”

“…This in turn limits the efficacy of phototherapy 82 , 83 . Besides this, phototherapy is known to generate heat, which affects the stability of genes 84 . In case gene gets deteriorated under the effect of light, co-transport system would loses the value for co-treatment 85 .…”

“…It causes less damage to surrounding healthy tissues and could eliminate a wide variety of tumors. In order to enhance therapeutic effect and reduce non-specific light damage to healthy tissues, PTAs are usually assisted by multiple imaging modalities to achieve precise treatment [ 22 ]. Reasonable design of therapeutic agents with imaging modalities could provide detailed information for tumor diagnosis and treatment monitoring, which offers new hope for effective TNBC treatment.…”
