REBCO FCL Modelling: Influence of Local Critical Current Non-Uniformities on Overall Behavior for Various Tape Architectures

Abstract: REBCO Coated Conductors with very good characteristics are now easily available in hundreds of meter lengths. Their use for resistive fault current limiter applications is constrained by the variations of the critical current density along the length, which may lead to the appearance of destructive hotspot under ohmic fault conditions. In this paper, we present a light 1D model of Coated Conductor FCL that take into account the critical current density variations along the length, assuming a homogenous tempera… Show more

“…Conventional materials used to increase the heat capacity of the tape are brass, stainless steel or Hastelloy in compact [13][14][15] or porous form [16]. Drawback of these materials is their electrical conductivity, which reduces electrical resistivity of the tape and causes that more heat is generated at the same level of electric field [17].…”

“…The Newton-Raphson algorithm, whose convergence depends drastically on initialization, is therefore not efficient in this implementation. A basic iterative scheme with over-damping [25] becomes faster on average, but still requires several tenths of iterations.…”

“…We want to go further with an objective of 300 VRMS/m. The conductor developed in FASTGRID derives from previous works on conductor optimization for SFCL [5,6]. Within FASTGRID a solution using REBCO tape based on a sapphire tape substrate is also investigated.…”
