Real-Life In-Home Viewing Conditions for Flat Panel Displays and Statistical Characteristics of Broadcast Video Signal

Abstract: The goal of this study is to clarify the realistic viewing conditions and video signal characteristics surrounding flat panel display television (TV), as flat panel display television is becoming increasingly popular. We have conducted an investigation of TV viewing conditions in the home and the statistical characteristics of TV broadcast signals. Our study of viewing conditions indicates that the viewing environment at home is at minimum 3 times of the absolute display height with an average 2.5 m viewing di… Show more

For TVs we used an approximation of the average viewing distance reported in [44]. For near and far viewing distances we used appropriate common sense measurements.…”

“…Stimulus speeds of 1-16 deg/sec were presented, which covers the range that is typically presented on television. 15 The conditions were chosen following pilot experiments to concentrate measurements in the neighborhood of the thresholds. All of the conditions are shown in Fig.…”

“…For each combination of stimulus speed and temporal presentation interval, there is a line representing the alias of lowest frequency: (14) The window of visibility is represented by an ellipse with a horizontal dimension of 2cff and vertical dimension of 2va: (15) Combining Eqs. (14) and (15) and representing the resultant in the form of the quadratic equation, we obtain: (16) There are many cases in which the alias line intersects the ellipse in two points, which means that the alias should be visible.…”
