Reaction kinetics of lactic acid with methanol catalyzed by acid resins

Abstract: The esterification of aqueous lactic acid solution with methanol and its reverse reaction catalyzed by acidic cation exchange resins in the H+ form were carried out in a batch system. The inhibiting effects of water and methanol on the resins were evaluated. The experimental data were correlated by a kinetic model that the inhibition by methanol and water was included. The reaction rate constants and the adsorption coefficients were determined from the experiments. The activity of acidic resin was compared wit… Show more

“…From Figure , the temperature has a slightly negative effect on the IBOH equilibrium conversion because the IBIBE esterification is exothermic reaction. Nevertheless, nearly equal IBOH conversions are reached at equilibrium, which has also been discovered by other authors . This behavior can be interpreted by the relatively small standard enthalpy of esterification so that the chemical equilibrium constant is originally temperature independent.…”

“…Several investigators have explored only the kinetics of LA esterification with methanol in the past (Choi et al, 1996;Seo and Hong, 2000;Sanz et al, 2002;Kumar et al, 2006b;andJiang et al, 2010. Sanz et al (2004) A quasi-homogeneous (QH) activity (a i = γ i x i ) based on kinetic model is used and can be written as:…”

“…In the presence of Dowex 50 W resins, different results were also recorded for the esterification of lactic and salisilic acids with methanol (Choi et al, 1996;Bochner et al, 1965). Furthermore, in the presence of Amberlyst-15, the esterification of acrylic and lactic acids with butanol showed that the total change was controlled by the surface reaction and alcohol and water had an inhibition effect on the reaction rate (Darge and Thyrion, 1993;Dassy et al, 1994).…”
