Determination of Adsorption and Kinetic Parameters for Synthesis of Isobutyl Acetate Catalyzed by Amberlite Ir-122

Abstract: In the present study, the kinetics of esterification of acetic acid with isobutanol was studied by using Amberlite IR-122 as an acid catalyst. Experiments were carried out in a stirred batch reactor in dioxane at different temperatures (323 to 348 K) under atmospheric pressure. The equilibrium constant was found to be constant as 4 in the temperatures ranging from 323 to 367 K. The possible mechanism of reaction was mathematically treated using the theories of the Eley-Rideal model based on inhibition by water… Show more

“…The methods for preparing IBOAC were always the focal point in commercial production because of its good performance as a solvent and pleasant odor. In the 1990s, some researchers had paid close attention to the synthesis methods. , Nowadays, the most common way to synthesize IBOAC is esterification. For instance, the reaction of isobutanol (IBOH) and acetic acid or acetic anhydride can be conducted with strong acid as the catalyst. Although for the moment the technology for preparing IBOAC via the esterification reaction has been mature, it is worth taking account of another perfect option, transesterification, for preparing IBOAC (eq ).…”

“…Isobutyl acetate (isoBuOAc) is used as an additive in food and pharmaceutical industries, and it is also a solvent applied in nitrocellulose, paint, and pesticids. It can be added into azeotropes, as entrainer, to enhance the separation process. , Because of its good solvent performance and pleasant odor, the production of isobutyl acetate has increased in recent years. …”
