Crop yield prediction is relevant subject of current agricultural science. There are various mathematical approaches to crop yield prediction, and regression analysis, notwithstanding the fact that it is somewhat outdated, is still one of the most used ones in this purpose. The quality of predictive model is of great importance, and it is strongly dependent on the rational choice of the target function. The goal of this study is to find out the best regression model for winter wheat, soybeans, and grain corn yield prediction depending on the crops’ water use. The data on true crops’ yields and water use were collected within 1970-2020 at the experimental fields of the Institute of Climate-Smart Agriculture, Kherson region, Ukraine. In total, 145 data pairs were processed by the best subsets regression to find out the best model in terms of fitting quality (assessed by the Pearson’s coefficient of correlation), and prediction accuracy (assessed by the values of the minimum and maximum absolute errors and mean average percentage error). As a result, it was established that the best fitting quality for all the studied crops is attributed to cubic function, while the best accuracy is recorded for hyperbolic (reverse) function in soybeans (mean absolute percentage error is 12.27%), quadratic and hyperbolic functions in winter wheat (mean absolute percentage error is 20.54%), and cubic function in grain corn (mean absolute percentage error is 14.92%). To sum up the results of the study, it is recommended to apply cubic regression function for modeling crops’ yields in agricultural studies.

Modern fruit growing involves the use of drip irrigation systems. The methodology for diagnosing of drip irrigation terms appointment and calculation of irrigation rates require continuous improvement on the basis of the introduction of measuring instruments. These issues are relevant for the commercial fruit growing of the world's most common perennial crop -apple trees (Malus domestica Borkh). The purpose of the experiment was to optimise drip irrigation regimes and to analyse the evapotranspiration (ET) of an apple tree depending on the methods of drip irrigation terms appointment. For comparison, four methods were applied: 1) the digital iMetos ECO D2 soil moisture station, 2) the tensiometric method, 3) the Penman-Monteith calculation, and 4) the visual method. The control was irrigation-free treatment. The results of the experiment confirmed the effectiveness of the use of drip irrigation for the cultivation of an intensive apple orchard at the Steppe of Ukraine. According to the parameters of the drip irrigation regime and the yield of apple trees, the use of the iMetos ECO D2 soil moisture station was determined as the most effective method of drip irrigation terms appointment. In this treatment, the irrigation rate was 650 m 3 ha -1 , the crop evapotranspiration (ЕТс) value 3.25 thousand m 3 ha -1 , the water consumption coefficient 83.4 m 3 t -1 , the irrigation efficiency 20.7 m 3 t -1 , and the marketability of apples was 93%. It was found that the removable fruit ripeness parameters: tissue density, sugar content, and degree of starch degradation, were within the sanitary norms of apple quality. This method is defined as the most water-saving, based on the experimental data on irrigation rate and crop productivity. Thus, it is recommended for the use in apple production in the South of Ukraine.

The article presents the field studies results on the role of soil moisture on the yield of root chicory plants and the determination of the water forms content in plants on plots of different soil fertility with the organic fertilizers application of 20 t/ha. It has been established that with the most intensive growth and development of plants in fertilized areas during the growing season, a higher percentage of total and free water and less bound water were accumulated in the soil compared to areas where organic fertilizers were not applied. In terms of total water content in plants, the difference was insignificant, especially in the daytime. Thus, the organic fertilizers introduction into the soil under root chicory in order to obtain high yields makes it possible to better retain soil moisture in the soil, which further affects to the crop yield. The amount of necessary moisture in the soil is one of the main factors for the growth and development of common beans. The process of seed germination will begin with swelling. When swollen, it absorbs 100-120% of moisture in relation to its own weight. That is why bean seeds come together when sown in sufficiently warmed soil. It takes 6-10 days from the moment of sowing to germination under favorable conditions, and germination is delayed up to 14-20 days in cool weather. Optimum humidity on different soils for the most friendly germination of seeds ranges from 25 to 75% of full moisture capacity. So, on a fertilized field, common bean seeds germinate better at 75%, on heavy soils - at 50%, on light - 25%, on clay soils equally at 25 and 75% humidity from full moisture capacity. Also, the beans’ need for moisture largely depends on the phases of development. It is especially demanding on moisture during the period of seed germination and emergence of seedlings, in the budding phase of flowering and ripening. From germination to flowering, beans are less demanding on moisture compared to other periods of development
