Rapid prototyping-assisted tooth autotransplantation is associated with a reduced root canal treatment rate: a retrospective cohort study

Abstract: Background Autotransplantation is a beneficial treatment with a high success rate for young patients. However, most adult patients require root canal treatment (RCT) of the donor teeth after the autotransplantation procedure, which causes a prolonged treatment time and additional expenses and increases the rate of future tooth fracture. Rapid prototyping (RP)-assisted autotransplantation shortens the extra-alveolar time and enables a superior clinical outcome. However, no cohort studies of the … Show more

“…The 3D replica substantially aided in reducing the extra-alveolar time, which had been considered an important influencing factor for normal periodontal healing and DAT success [ 13 ]. A recent retrospective study showed that DAT assisted by rapid prototyping was associated with reduced need for RCT [ 14 ]. Pre-preparing the recipient site with aid of transplant replica also averted unnecessary osteotomy during DAT.…”

“…Regarding the technique of autotransplantation of mature teeth, the extraoral root-end resection of teeth with complete root formation showed promising outcomes for transplants, especially with a single root canal and uncomplicated root morphology [ 16 ]. For formation of a transplant cavity, a donor tooth replica was fabricated before surgery using 3D printer machine [ 17 ]. The use of rapid prototyping for autotransplantation enabled accurate positional planning and decreased the extra-alveolar time and endodontic treatment rate [ 17 ].…”

“…Extra-oral RCT during ATT is not recommended because of the risk of PDL injury and prolonged extra-alveolar time [ 5 ]. Recent studies stated that only 50% of the patients of CARP-based ATT therapy required a root canal treatment with a 100% autotransplantation survival rate [ 23 , 24 ]. Hence, the studies stated that rapid prototyping-assisted autotransplantation is associated with a reduced RCT rate, but an adequate sample size and long-term follow-ups are required for further study.…”
