Rapid inactivation of airborne porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus using an atmospheric pressure air plasma

Abstract: The transmission of airborne diseases in animals poses great risks to animal safety with potential significant economic losses. In this study, we report on the use of a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) for in-flight inactivation of an airborne aerosolized porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus. The infectivity of the sampled virus downstream compared to upstream of the DBD reactor as determined by the TCID 50 method showed a ∼3.5 log 10 reduction in

“…[ 20,21 ] CAPs generate many reactive oxygen and nitrogen species as O 3 , NO, NO 2 , N 2 O 5 , HNO 2 , HNO 3 , ONOO − , H 2 O 2 , normalOnormalH, and many other reactive species, that can react with the airborne particles and mediate various oxidative processes. [ 22–25 ] Due to the associated electric field, nonthermal plasmas (NTPs) can alter particle transport by inducing a negative charge on the particles, thus imparting charge‐driven filtration as well as trapping of these particles. In this way, plasma can simultaneously act as a particle filter as well as a disinfection technology.…”

“…[ 29 ] The experiments with the nebulizer positioned upstream and downstream of the plasma source at least showed that 31% of the reduced number of cfu can be attributed to long‐lived species. Nevertheless, attempts with an even more differentiative perspective for parasitic inactivation effects, similar to Nayak et al [ 27 ] using the impinger method, can be considered for future works.…”
