The present review covers reports discussing potential applications of the specificity of Raman techniques in the advancement of digital farming, in line with an assumption of yield maximisation with minimum environmental impact of agriculture. Raman is an optical spectroscopy method which can be used to perform immediate, label-free detection and quantification of key compounds without destroying the sample. The authors particularly focused on the reports discussing the use of Raman spectroscopy in monitoring the physiological status of plants, assessing crop maturity and quality, plant pathology and ripening, and identifying plant species and their varieties. In recent years, research reports have presented evidence confirming the effectiveness of Raman spectroscopy in identifying biotic and abiotic stresses in plants as well as in phenotyping and digital selection of plants in farming. Raman techniques used in precision agriculture can significantly improve capacities for farming management, crop quality assessment, as well as biological and chemical contaminant detection, thereby contributing to food safety as well as the productivity and profitability of agriculture. This review aims to increase the awareness of the growing potential of Raman spectroscopy in agriculture among plant breeders, geneticists, farmers and engineers.

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world and is crucial in the economy of many developing countries. The search to improve coffee quality comes from many fronts, as do the many ways to measure quality and the factors that affect it. Several techniques are used to measure the different metrics to assess coffee quality, across different types of coffee samples and species, and throughout the entire process from farm to cup. In this work, we conducted a systematic mapping study of 1,470 articles to identify the aspects of quality that are the most important in the scientific literature to evaluate coffee throughout the processing chain. The study revealed that cup quality and biochemical composition are the most researched quality attributes. The main objective of the reviewed studies is the correlation between different quality measurements. The most used techniques are the analytical chemistry methods. The most studied species is Coffea arabica. The most used sample presentation is green coffee. The postharvest stage is the most researched, in which quality control receives more attention. In the preharvest stage, management practices stand out. Finally, the most used type of research was the evaluation research.

Coffee enthusiasts now consume coffee not only as a reliever of drowsiness but also as a lifestyle. Sizeable annual consumption and high demand for exports of coffee can trigger a shortage of coffee stocks from supply companies. This shortage has forced some producers to take fraud actions in coffee counterfeiting. With the vast economic benefits from substituting or adulterating coffee, the development of authentication methods is an ideal solution to follow up on this practice. The combination of some chemometric methods including pattern recognition and multivariate calibrations with fingerprint analysis techniques of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy could be performed to authenticate coffee products. The use of chemometrics is unavoidable because of the large amount of data received even from the single scanning of FTIR spectra. Some chemometric methods are commonly applied to build classification and prediction models of adulterants in coffee. The objective of this review is to feature the application of infrared (IR) spectroscopy and chemometric analysis to authenticate coffee from various adulterants.
