Radiology Education in the Time of COVID-19: A Novel Distance Learning Workstation Experience for Residents

Abstract: Rationale and Objectives: The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has challenged the educational missions of academic radiology departments nationwide. We describe a novel cloud-based HIPAA compliant and accessible education platform which simulates a live radiology workstation for continued education of first year radiology (R1) residents, with an emphasis on call preparation and peer to peer resident learning. “…Rainford et al [ 147 ] identified that radiography students might not be fully confident in using PPE and suggested that practical training sessions be conducted before their placement—an approach that a Singapore academic institution adopted[ 123 ]. New norms of teaching HCPs have also been suggested by many authors ranging from virtual teaching[ 148 , 149 ], adoption of technology-based platforms[ 150 , 151 ], simulation and virtual reality[ 152 , 153 ]. Similar to qualified HCPs, medical students who are recruited to assist in a pandemic need to undergo specific training programmes.…”

“…Faculty and residents developed novel approaches to virtual read out sessions and clinical consults. Consider temporary expense reductions by moratoria through trainee national course attendance, meeting and travel expenses, the graduation event, and trainee applicant interviews (22). Consider education cost center salary shifts through temporary redeployment of education office administrative staff.…”
