Radiological Findings in Three Cases of Paraxial Radial Hemimelia in Goats.

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Hemimelia is a congenital abnormality characterized by the absence of a portion of the normal structures in a limb. Hemimelia is classified as transversal and paraxial and is related to genetical and environmental factors. This article shows the radiolo gical findings observed in three different cases of paraxial hemimelia occurred in goats (radial agenesia, absence of the portion of the distal epiphysis of the radius and anomalous radius with ulnar hypoplasia). Possible causes related to these abnor… Show more

“…The affected limb(s) are shortened with a varus deformity and are not functional or gaiting (Jonson, 1995). In our patient, the clinical signs were also similar with the previous reports of hemimelia in dogs (Lallo et al, 2001;Rahal et al, 2005), cats (Lewis and Van Sickle, 1970), goats (Corbera et al, 2002), minks (Rantanen and Hegreberg, 1982), and humans (Mo and Manske, 2004). The etiology of radial hemimelia is considered to be genetical, environmental or a combination of both factors.…”

“…Radial hemimelia is a congenital abnormality characterized by the partial or complete absence of the radius (Corbera et al, 2002;Towle and Breur, 2004). If all or part of the middle bones of a limb are absent, with the proximal and distal portions being present, the hemimelia is called intercalary.…”

“…A forma mais comum de hemimelia em cães é a radial, caracterizada pela ausência parcial ou completa do rádio (CORBERA et al, 2002;TOWLE;BREUR, 2004), que provoca deformidade angular do membro afetado, acarretando severas limitações funcionais (MENDES; RAUSCH; CARAPETO, 2004).…”

“…In this case, the presence of consanguinity, as reported by the owner, can be considered as a possible cause of dysostosis, in accordance with Prats (2005). Despite the fact that there is little study concerning the consanguinity as a cause of these changes in dogs, some cases have already been observed in other species, as in caprines and equines (Corbera et al, 2002;Marchiori et al, 2014). Indeed, Marchiori et al (2014) describes a bilateral amelia of the forelimbs in an Arabian foal, daughter of parents with 25% of consanguinity.…”
