Radical copolymerization and terpolymerization of 1,1,2,3,4,4‐hexafluoro‐1,3‐butadiene with alkylvinyl ethers, alkenes, and methyl‐2,3,3‐trifluoroacrylate

Abstract

ZUSAMMENFASSUNG:Copolymere von 1 ,I ,2,3,4,4-Hexafluor-2,3-butadien (HFB) mit n-Alkylvinylethern (AVE) (Alkyl = Butyl, Propyl, Ethyl und Glycidyl) oder mit Alkenen wie Isobuten, Ethylen und Propylen wurden durch radikalische Ldsungscopolymerisation unter Verwendung von peroxidischen Niedertemperaturinitiatoren synthetisiert. Die Polymerisation verlief nach radikalischem Mechanismus und wurde durch die Zugabe von 111-Diphenyl-2-pikryl-hydrazyl v6llig inhibiert . Die Anfangsgeschwindigkeit der Copolymerisation hing von der Gesamtkonzentration der Monomeren und von dem Verhtiltnis [HFB] zu [AVE] ab; die maximale Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit wurde bei etwa Bquimolaren Konzentrationsverhaltnissen der Monomeren erzielt. Durch die Untersuchung der Struktur der Copolymeren HFB-AVE wurde die alternierende Anordnung der Hexafluorobutadien-und Vinylethereinheiten in der Copolymerkette nachgewiesen. Durch die radikalische Ldsungsterpolymerisation des Monomerensystems HFB-AVE-Methyl-2,3,3-trifluoracrylat (MTFA) wurden Terpolymere des Typus -[HFBL-[AVEb-[MTFAI,synthetisiert, deren Struktur einer alternierenden Anordnung von Perfluor-(HFB und MTFA) und Vinylethereinheiten entspricht. Durch alkalische Hydrolyse der Trifluoracrylateinheiten wurden die entsprechenden Terpolymeren der Trifluoracrylsiure synthetisiert. SUMMARY:Copolymers of 1 ,I ,2,3,4,4-hexafluoro-1,3-butadiene (HFB) with n-alkylvinyl ethers (AVE) (alkyl being butyl, propyl, ethyl, and glycidyl) or alkenes of the type isobutylene, ethylene, and propylene were synthesized by the solution radical copolymerization using low-temperature peroxide initiators. The reaction proceeded by radical mechanism and was fully inhibited by the addition of 1 ,l-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl.The initial rate of the copolymerization reaction depended on the total monomer concentration and on the [HFB] to [AVE] ratio. The maximal reaction rate was reached at the concentration ratios of both monomers approaching their equimolar participation. An investigation of the structure of the HFB-AVE copolymers proved the alternating order of the hexafluorobutadiene and vinylether units in the copolymer chain.By using the radical solution terpolymerization of the monomer system HFB-AVEmethyl-2,3,3-trifluoroacrylate (MTFA) terpolymers of the type -[HFB&-[AVEL-[MTFAIz-were prepared, the structure of which corresponds to the alternating order of the vinyl ether and perfluorinated HFB and MTFA units. Alkaline hydrolysis of the trifluoroacrylate units was used to prepare the corresponding terpolymers of the trifluoroacrylated acid.
