Radiation dose and image quality in spiral computed tomography: multicentre evaluation at six institutions.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of radiation dose with image quality in spiral CT. Seven clinical protocols were measured in six different radiological departments provided with four different types of high specification spiral CT scanners. Central and surface absorbed doses were measured in acrylic. The practical CT dose index (PCTDI) was calculated for seven clinical examination protocols and one standardized protocol using identical parameters on four different spiral CT scanners w… Show more

“…As X-ray energy (kilovoltage) decreases the contrast between the structures crossed by the X-ray beam increases [9,10]. This concept proved to be useful in our experience, as it enabled a marked reduction in the dose administered without affecting image quality.…”

“…In the literature, there are many papers on patient doses in CT reporting results of small or large scale surveys carried out in CT facilities throughout the world [6,12,22,23,[31][32][33][34][35] . When comparing the DLP values given in these reports for typical CT examinations, it can be seen that large differences exist among CT facilities.…”

“…El factor técnico de mayor impacto en la dosis de radiación en las tomografías computarizadas (TC) es la corriente de tubo. Justamente éste es el parámetro de máxima arbitrariedad seleccionado por el operador (8,9), con un rango de 150 a 240 mA para cortes de 5 a 15 mm de rotación que representan un rango de dosis al paciente de 7 a 21 mGy por corte helicoidal de 360° (10).…”
